Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Thanks for putting up with me being on retreat. I hope you had a wonderful five days of playing on the river. River playtime continues today, Saturday, probably not Sunday (it’ll be pouring), and possibly Monday. The strongest day will be Saturday, but don’t go shaking a stick at today when it’ll be both sunny and windy!
Thursday kicks off with pressures of 30.40/30.35/30.33 for gradients of 0.05 and 0.02. You’ll do best in the Corridor today as Portland is clear and we’re relying on max heating in the near east. Westerlies hold in the 14-17 range from Viento to Hood River this morning and add Stevenson and Mosier after a couple of hours. Don’t be surprised if Swell provides a couple more mph for a few hours before the metro area warms up. An early afternoon dip isn’t out of the question with full sunshine in the metro area. Late afternoon to evening should see a jump to 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier with 20-23 from Lyle to Celilo and 14-176 at Rufus (or a touch more). River flow over the last 24 hours was 175-213kcfs, river temp is 58.28F, and high temp forecast is 70F under sunny sky.
Friday looks like a great day to do something else. Calm wind starts the day. Stevenson briefly sees a bump to E 12-15 for a couple hours mid-morning before the wind goes calm. For anything else, you’ll have to wait until the evening when we might see W 11-14 from Stevenson to Swell. Think of this as a rest day in preparation for Saturday! High temp: 80F with a few high clouds.
A weak weather system (a front, to be specific) is bound for the Pacific Northwest on Saturday. You’ll know it’s coming by the high clouds above. Typical frontal pattern is a burst of wind at Swell followed by a precipitous crash followed by wind out east and a resurgence of gusty westerlies at Swell. The Lyle stretch of the river tends to do rather well in this setup. Dawn Patrol on Saturday (as of now) looks like 22-25 from Stevenson to Mosier with more possible at Viento and less possible at Stevenson. Get it quickly. The wind will probably drop into the mid teens at Swell while holding at Stevenson, Viento, and possibly Hood River. Look to the east for a quick build: 25-28 from Mosier to Rufus by late morning. In the afternoon, you’ll find 27-30 from Lyle to Arlington and potentially Threemile. From Stevenson to Mosier, the wind will bump back up to up-and-down 20-24. Hood River will probably see lighter wind. High temp: 73F for Hood River and 76F for Arlington. There’s a tentative downwind race from Blalock to Arlington on Saturday. Unofficial, unsanctioned.
Extended (when things get fuzzy): fun stuff happens on Sunday. An unseasonable visitor arrives in the form of an atmospheric river,. 200% of normal moisture, and 3.3 sigmas of PWAT. In other words, it’s likely to be very wet and not very windy. The only place we might see some wind is way far out east and then only in the upper teens to low 20’s at best. Stronger wind is in the cards for Monday afternoon in the eastern Gorge, but it’s far from an ideal setup, and there’s still quite a bit of range in the ensembles. We’ll keep a close eye on it. After that, models diverge wildly. We’ll leave it here for now. Have a great day on the river!

Sunday looks rainy.

There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. There’s a SUP foil downwind race from (probably) Blalock to Arlington on Saturday
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. Visit their website for more deets: https://www.columbiagorgejuniorkayakclub.org/. Amayah’s offers a free meal every First Thursday from 1pm to 4pm. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Cycling
Post, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Nestor are open. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral. It’s trail-building season. Get on the HRATS mailing list if you’d like to help out.
