Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! The heat wave continues, but we’ll hang on to west wind for at least part of it. The lightest day will be Monday. We’re not going to have enough wind to get on the water that day. Late Tuesday, the ridge and heat low shift inland and drive late-day west wind. Fingers crossed this happens early enough for us to take advantage of it. If not, Wednesday looks like a big day despite lingering temps in the 90s.

Sunday sees the hot weather and moderate west wind continue. Down at the Event Site, we have KB4C. Today’s events: a swim race, some sort of wind event, and a rubber duckie race. There should be enough wind to pull off an actual wind event. So. Sunday started with pressures of 29.92/29.90/29.92 for gradients of W 0.02 and E 0.02. Not much happens this morning. As the desert heat outpaces the west side (which is impressive, as the west side will be pushing 100), westerlies pick up. By early afternoon, we’ll have 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier with 11-14 from Lyle to Doug’s. The wind rises to 17-20 fro a couple hours from Stevenson to Mosier before dropping to 14-17 then returning at 19-22 after 5pm. Out near Rowena, westerlies slowly build to 19-22. River flow over the last 24 hours was 112-193kcfs, river temp is 67.46F, and high temp forecast is 98F.

Ridging builds in earnest on Monday and shuts things down. The wind will be calm for most of the day. As the desert approaches 111 degrees in the late afternoon, we could see westerlies at 10mph from Stevenson to Hood River. High temp: 105F. Ouch. That’s hot.

Tuesday will be equally hot and slightly more humid, but it also brings the possibility of a late-day shot of strong west wind. That’s just the shot the doctor ordered. The day starts calm. It stays that way for most of the day. If the timing works out just right, we’ll see the wind build mid afternoon into the evening. Call it 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River by 5pm and 23-26+ from Stevenson to Doug’s after 5pm. These cooldowns can be delayed, so keep your fingers crossed. High temp: 105F.

Extended: the heat low shifts firmly to the desert on Tuesday, and high temps drop about 15 degrees for the west side. It’ll still be hot: 90 degrees or so. Thanks to moderately strong offshore high pressure and a deep heat low in the 110 degree desert, we’ll have west wind at 28-33. Thursday is a long ways out, but for now, it looks like 25-28. Models keep the strong west wind around through at least Friday. Let’s leave it there for now. Stay hydrated. See you on the water.

The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. Columbia Gorge Tri Club meets at Mayer State Park at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.

Dirt is great in post as of 6/19. Post, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Nestor are open. Eightmile, Knebal, Bottle Prairie, Surveyor’s, Dog River, SuperConnector, and Cook Meadows are open. Fifteenmile is clear of snow but has not been cleared of downed trees. Lewis River is open. I received an email that Falls Creek is open. That is USFS land, and E-bikes are not allowed. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Light to moderate westerlies continue through Monday with models giving us just enough wind to get some of us on the water for part of each day. Monday looks like the lightest day of the bunch. A weak disturbance approaches from the west late Tuesday. If the timing is just right, we’ll have an excellent 100+ degree executive session. Starting Wednesday, brace yourself for a string of strong west wind days with temps in the 80-90 range. Very nice! Remember that KB4C (not just for kiteboarders any more!) is happening this weekend at the Event Site. Launching and landing is limited to event participants, but participation in events happening at the Event Site (music and such) is open to all. Also, the Gorge Downwind Champs will be running next week. Be prepared to navigate all sorts of downwind craft. Remember, don’t cross within 30′ downwind of a paddle craft, especially a SUP foiler not yet on foil. Those folks accelerate quickly. Cutting in front of them is like trying to dash across a road in front of a logging truck. Just don’t!

Let’s look at Saturday. We start with pressures of 29.99/29.94/29.96 for gradients of W 0.06 and E 0.02. Early wind was W 5mph or less west of The Dalles and E 5mph or less to the east. Westerlies pick up to 11-14 from Stevenson to Swell or Hood River for a couple hours mid-morning before dropping to 7-10 as temps equalize across the Cascades. In the afternoon, westerlies rise to 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River with 16-19 possible from Lyle to Doug’s. A brief period of 16-19 is possible from Stevenson to Swell as well. Avery joins in the evening. To the east, the wind remains calm or light easterly all day. River flow over the last 24 hours was 136-211kcfs, river temp is 67.28F, and high temp forecast is 95-100F.

Sunday brings another round of blow-dryer wind. We start with 10-13 from Stevenson to Viento or perhaps Swell. Wait until early afternoon, and we should have a period of 17-20 from Stevenson to Doug’s. The wind then drops to 15-18 at Swell and Hood River and rises to 19-22 at Stevenson, Viento, Mosier, and the Lyle-Avery stretch. Rufus might just pick up to 11-14 with 110 degree temps. High temp for Hood River: 101. The Dalles: 105+.

Monday looks searingly hot and less windy than Sunday. There may be a brief Dawn Patrol from Viento to Swell at 13-16 or so, but the wind will quickly fall below 10mph for most of the day. It could bounce up to 11-14 from Stevenson to Doug’s late afternoon. High temp: completely unreasonable at 105 degrees. At least it won’t be muggy.

Extended: Tuesday starts dead calm. Cross your fingers. A disturbance offshore helps shift the ridge east in the afternoon. In plain language, that means the hottest temps will be over the desert, slight cooling will arrive in the west, and offshore high pressure will persist. This is supposed to happen late, but reality often shifts things later. If we’re lucky and the timing holds, we’ll see a sharp uptick in the wind late afternoon with 25+ mph from Stevenson to Rufus in the evening. Wednesday looks ripping windy. Actually, it looks like we’ll see a string of strong west wind days next week as offshore high pressure and wickedly brutal desert heat persist. See you on the water!
