SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! Hopefully you survived the heat-humidity-windless conditions the last couple of days. Westerlies, pretty strong westerlies, return today and persist for the long run. Strongests days looks like today (Thursday) and Saturday despite the not-perfect setup we’ll be facing.
Thursday started with pressures of 30.04/29.90/29.86 for gradients of 0.14/0.04. Solid marine clouds were stacked up against the Cascades with a few clouds migrating past Hood River. Some marine clouds are forecast to linger all day, a good sign for the wind despite low pressure (not ideal) offshore. Dawn Patrol wind was 14-17mph most places (Stevenson, Hatch, Rowena, Arlington) with 20-23mph at Viento and less than 10mph at Rufus. Morning wind quickly builds to 22-25mph from Viento to Arlington (gradients are actually forecast to dip this morning before rebounding). Stevenson will build more slowly thanks to the cloud cover.
For the afternoon, we’ll have stronger wind. Westerlies build to 23-26mph from Stevenson to Hood River with 26-29mph from Mosier to Rufus, 23-26mph near Arlington, and 20-23mph near Threemile. After 5pm, the wind drops off: 20-23mph Stevenson to Rowena and 22-25mph at Rufus and Arlington. Thunderstorms are possible east of Rufus today, so choose your play spot wisely! Keep in mind that this forecast predicts the iWind/iKite sensor readings. The Swell sensor reads low. In other words, 20-23mph at Swell is more like 26-29mph at Rufus/Arlington/Viento, and 30mph at Swell is closer to 36mph at those three high-reading sensors. River flow over the last 24 hours was 106-192kcfs, river temp is 71.1F (poor salmon), and high temp forecast is 86F in Hood River and 95F in the desert.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
Looking at Friday… low pressure lingers offshore, warmer temps are forecast, but the thermal gradient across the Cascades persists. This gives us another decent day. Early wind will be 17-20mph from Viento to the Hatch with 5-10mph at Stevenson and 10-13mph east of Hood River to Arlington. Wind slowly builds. By midday, we’ll have 20-23mph from Stevenson to Hood River with 17-20mph at Rowena. Thermal gradients really lend a hand late in the day as the desert soars to 100 degrees: 23-26mph from Stevenson to Doug’s with 20-23mph at Avery. At some point, the Hatch will poop out (fade to gusty 16-19mph, but I wanted to say “poop”). After 5pm, Arlington joins at 20-23mph. High temps: 90 in Hood River, 100 in the desert.
An approaching cool air mass on Saturday does a couple of helpful things: it forms all-day marine clouds west of Mosier or Hood River; it sets up a significant cross-Cascade temp gradient. Early wind will be 17-20mph most places. Morning: 21-24mph from Viento to Mosier with 17-20mph to the east. Afternoon: 27-30mph east of the low clouds (Viento?) to Rufus with 23-26mph at Arlington. Highs: 79 in Hood River and 90ish in the desert.
Looking at the long-range forecast… models hint at 20ish mph both Sunday and Monday with high temps around 80 degrees in Hood River. Both days are likely to have morning marine clouds; we often see reality beat the models in this setup. Looking longer range… models suggest some form of westerlies (too much uncertainty to pin down strength or location) lingering through next week. Another good stretch of wind is on tap. Good morning, neighbors! Thursday’s starting out muggy and warm, but it’ll end up cooler than yesterday, thank the stars! Yesterday was swampier than my vag*na, and that’s SAYING SOMETHING! Although Friday will be warmer again (90 in Hood River, 100 in The Dalles), temps fall significantly into the weekend, and so does the swampiness “VAG*NA” quotient. West wind persists day after day, not awesome with all the fires burning, but at least the fire crews did a spectacular job last night putting out all the small fires from lightning strikes!
This morning in Glenwood, it’s 59 degrees and muggy. The dewpoint in most places was 60F to start the day, which is very, very muggy for around here. Checking in with our friends in places threatened by the current USA administration, we have….

For the rest of the day in the Gorge…. morning clouds west of Hood river dissipate. Thunderstorms are possible east of the Arlington Triangle. Other than that: mostly clear and sunny today with decreasing smoke. West wind picks up to 25-30mph this afternoon and fills in all the way from Stevenson to Arlington’s Triangle. Highs range from 84 in Stevenson to 86 in Hood River to 92 in The Dalles (that’s better than 105, eh?) and 101 in Pasco.
Humidity lingers on Friday, when we’ll start the day muggy and 60-70 degrees. A few low clouds linger for a few hours in the morning west of Hood River, but we’ll all be mostly clear by afternoon. Highs: 86/90/98/100. West wind starts at 15-20mph between Stevenson and Hood River and builds to 25mph between Stevenson and Arlington by late afternoon.
The overall setup does a big shift (not a big shit) on Saturday as a trough drops south from Alaska and a front approaches. All those words can be summed up this way: it’ll be cooler! Low clouds stick around west of Hood River or west of Stevenson all day. After a 60-65 degree start, temps rise to 77/79/86/94. This will be the windiest day of the next five. 15-20mph west wind in the morning builds to 25-35mph in the afternoon between Stevenson and Arlington.
A similar pattern – morning clouds to the west, sun to the east – persists at least into Monday with highs around 80/82/88/91 both days. West wind will be 20mph or so both days after a 10-15mph start. That’s all the time I have today. Safe travels. -TATAS
