SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! It’s July, and that’s pretty much synonymous with the phrase “It’s gonna be breezy!” While today (Sunday) will be on the light side for July, it’ll still be enough to get many of you out there. Ditto for much of the next week. Our windiest day looks like Tuesday and perhaps next Saturday. Pretty solid Gorge wind forecast, eh?
Not much was happening at dawn on Sunday: pressures were 30.04/30.01/30.00 for gradients of 0.03/0.01. Today, we wait on heating to get the wind going. By midday, enough cross-Cascade temp gradient develops for 13-16mph between Stevenson and Mosier. The wind then builds to gusty 15-18mph between Stevenson and Hood River with 19-22mph from Mosier to Avery. Rufus joins at 19-22mph after 5pm. River flow over the last 24 hours was 113-157kcfs, river temp is 71.2F, and high temp forecast is 81F for Hood River.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
A very similar setup is forecast on Monday: low pressure in the Gulf of Alaska, heat in the desert, and weak weather features moving around… The day starts with 16-19mph from Viento to Hood River with 10-13mph east of Hood River to Rufus and less than 10mph at Stevenson. Midday: 18-21mph from Stevenson to Arlington. Afternoon wind holds at 18-21mph between Stevenson and Mosier (exception: 16-19mph at the Hatch) and rises to 22-25mph from Lyle to Rufus. High temp: 83F in Hood River.
On Tuesday, a weak shortwave swings through and aids the formation of marine clouds west of Mosier. Early wind will be 11-14mph from Stevenson to Arlington. The wind slowly builds through the morning. By midday, we’ll have 20-23mph from Stevenson to Hood River with 23-26mph from Mosier to Rufus. Arlington joins at 23-26mph after 5pm. High temps: 79F in Hood River and upper 80s in the desert.
Wednesday and Thursday look like 17-20mph or more. Ensembles hint at Friday being somewhat stronger, and there are pretty clear signs that next Saturday will be 25mph or more. Have fun out there today. I’ll see you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

Good morning, neighbors! I woke up super-duper early this morning, and thank the stars, it was dark! Dark mornings make TATAS happy. To the Senate: PASS THE YEAR-ROUND DST BILL!!! It was a warm start to the day, but it won’t be too hot. Seasonable, reasonable weather continues through next weekend despite a warming trend this week. No rain is forecast. No thunderstorms are forecast. Fingers crossed for no !CE storms!
Glenwood this morning and wildfire stuff
Glenwood wasn’t particularly cold this morning – 50F when I woke up. Other places were colder: parts of Parkdale fell below 50 degrees, and there was a 41 degree reading in the forest somewhere. Speaking of forest… the Grasshopper Fire has resulted in all sorts of evac orders in the Wamic/Tygh Valley area as well as closing the MHNF south of the 44 Road to the Boulder Lakes area. Stay safe, friends! Farther south, all sorts of folks are evacuated (Warm Springs, I see you and am wishing you well) due to multiple large fires burning. Are you uncertain about the cause of climate change? Can we agree, at least, that the fires are getting worse?

TATAS is very glad to live in the Gorge where the weather is both pleasant and exciting! Hopefully you feel the same! Today’s weather sees clouds west of Hood River in the morning and sun everywhere this afternoon. Temps build to 79 in Stevenson, 81 in Hood River, 87 in The Dalles, and 92 in Pasco. After a light start, the wind builds to 20mph out of the west between Stevenson and Celilo Village with the Rufus area joining in the evening. East of Rufus: light wind.
Monday’s Gorge weather forecast
A few low clouds sneak back in west of Wyeth prior to dawn on Monday, but the rest of us start the day clear. Temps will be 50-60F to start. Morning wind: 15-20mph between Viento and Hood River with 10-15mph as far east as Rufus. Afternoon: 20mph west of Lyle and 20-25mph between Lyle and Rufus. Highs will be 81/83/89/92.
Tuesday’s Gorge weather forecast
Highs will be down just a bit on Tuesday as a shortwave aloft encourages deeper, more persistent, more inquisitive marine clouds. You didn’t know clouds could be inquisitive, did you? Neither did I until I typed that! Most of the clouds leave in the afternoon, but areas west of Hood River remain partly cloudy. Tuesday wind will be 10-15mph between Stevenson and Arlington in the morning. Afternoon brings 20mph west of Mosier and 25mph from Mosier to Arlington. Highs: 78/79/85/91.
Extended Gorge weather forecast
Slightly warmer weather is forecast Wednesday and Thursday (highs 90-93 from The Dalles eastward and 80-85 west of The Dalles) with west wind at 20-25mph both afternoons. Friday looks like peak heat. A trough drops down from the Alaska area next weekend resulting in cooler, windier conditions. Keep in mind that fire danger remains extreme. Just one example of this is the Grasshopper Fire: it went from 100 acres to 4000 acres in less than a day. Be careful out there, folks, and if you’re under evacuation orders, know that TATAS has you in their heart. Safe travels. -TATAS

Hi Temira,
I’m trying to better understand how to interpret the chart with the green and blue colors, and several people I’ve spoken with have had the same question. It doesn’t seem to provide the same clear, at-a-glance value as the first location table.
Your report is already very helpful, but I think repeating that first table for each day of the extended forecast would make it even more useful. It would quickly communicate the expected wind speeds by location, simplify some of the expanded narrative, and potentially reduce the amount of explanation you need to provide.
I created an AI script that combines iKite and other forecast data into simple wind-speed tables for the different Gorge regions for the following two days, and the format has been extremely useful.
I just wanted to share my observations and see what you think.
