Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! Today’s your best chance for a west wind day for a bit, so get yourself ready and get it! We’ll have lighter westerlies Saturday and light/variable wind for the rest of the holiday weekend. Stronger easterlies are likely Tuesday. After that, model uncertainty rises.
This morning (Friday) started with pressures of 29.93/29.77/29.69 for big onshore gradients. Those wil change rapidly with an incoming weather system. Early morning speeds were all over the place: 20ish from Viento to the Hatch, low 20s near Rowena, 30 at Maryhill (6 at The Wall). Strongest gradients are forecast to be this morning prior to the weather system, so get out there and get it. We should see gusty 20-24mph from Stevenson to Doug’s this morning ahead of incoming drizzle.
Wind under the incoming low clouds will drop to the teens, and wind east of either Lyle or The Dalles will rise to gusty 25-28mph from about 2pm on into the evening. It’s likely we’ll see quite a bit of up-and-down to the speeds as well thanks to the frontal passage; a couple hour period of decreased wind late morning is likely. River flow over the last 24 hours is 91-134kcfs, river temp is 65.3F, and high temp forecast is 64F and increasing clouds.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
Saturday starts with light west wind under 10mph. We’ll see a period of 15-18mph westerlies from the Hatch or Hood River to Mosier mid-morning to early afternoon, after which the wind is likely to fade below 10mph. High temp: 59F.
Sunday sees easterlies at 15mph at Rooster, Stevenson, Home Valley and Viento for a few hours in the morning. The wind fades in the afternoon and drops below 10mph. East of The Dalles, the wind rises to E 10-15mph in the afternoon. High temp: 60. Light/variable wind is forecast for Monday. Tuesday: easterlies at 20-25mph. Have a great day on the Nch’i Wana! Good morning, neighbors! Exciting weather today, at least compared to the recent calm – a weather system moves through and brings a little rain west of Mosier and increased wind over the last several days. Our long weekend – Monday is Indigenous Peoples’ Day – ups the frost chances, especially on Monday. Models then suggest we’ll be back to dry, above-normal weather for a while…
Before we look at all that, we look at Glenwood: it was HOT there this morning – 59 degrees, a full 30 degrees warmer than it’s likely to be in the morning for the next few days. Awesome weather there, for sure! Glenwood was warmer than Hood River this morning – it was 58 there. Thanks to a cold front swinging inland today, high temps will be down about 15 degrees from Thursday: 61 in Stevenson, 64 in Hood River, 71 in The Dalles, and 74 in Pasco. Rain arrives west of Cascade Locks around 8am and makes it to Hood River or Mosier late morning. Drizzle continues in the western Gorge, west of Wyeth, until 5pm or so. From Hood River east to Boardman, the weather turns dry after 2pm. After a cloudy morning, the sky turns mostly clear in the evening.
Morning wind will be around 20mph all the way form Stevenson to Arlington. Afternoon: 15-20mph west of Lyle and 25-30mph from Lyle to Boardman, which will wake up Boardman’s Bored Men (they have a motorcycle club by that name, and the members go around making things more exciting by doing random acts of kindness).

Saturday morning looks chilly, but just how chilly depends on cloud cover. Somewhere between Underwood and Lyle, the sky goes from cloudy to clear. Under the clouds, frost is unlikely. Areas above 1000′ should drop to 31-35 degrees under clear sky (Centerville, Sevenmile, South Wasco, Goldendale, Appleton, High Prairie, etc). Glenwood, if it’s clear, will drop to 26-29 degrees. Thanks to lingering dewpoints of 32-41 degrees, a Nothing cloud or fog is more likely closer to the Nch’i Wana. Rest of Saturday: partly cloudy sky, light west wind (peaking at 10-15mph between Hood River and The Dalles midday), and a few scattered afternoon sprinkles. Highs range form 57 in Stevenson to 59 in Hood river, 64 n The Dalles, and 63 in Pasco.
Colder, dry air slides in from the NE on Saturday night into Sunday. This drops the dewpoints and puts us at higher risk of frost. Still… areas near the Nch’i Wana should be protected by a Nothing cloud or fog (see, there is a benefit to it – warmer morning temps!). Morning sky coverage will be partly cloudy. Areas above 1000′ will drop to 31-35 degrees with the usual cold spots, well, colder. Rest of the day: clear to the far west, partly cloudy central, and cloudy near the Nch’i Wana east of Biggs. Highs range from 60-63. We’ll see light east wind: 15mph near Cascade Locks and Viento, light between Hood River and The Dalles, and 10mph east of The Dalles and into South Wasco and the Goldendale area.
Clear sky, lower dewpoints (19-33), and 850mb temps at 0-3C put us all at risk of frost on Monday morning. Highs Monday will be 63-66 degrees and sunny with light/variable wind. While there’s some model uncertainty as we move deeper into next week, the general picture looks a bit warmer than normal and likely dry. If there is any rain, it’ll come Wednesday when there’s a 30-40% chance of a trace to a tenth of an inch. There’s no clear sign of a big rainstorm any time in the next couple of weeks. If we can make it through this weekend without a frost, good things will continue in the garden! Safe travels. -TATAS
