Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – 5000′
4a-8a 8a-12p 12p-4p 4p-8p 8p-4a
Saturday
Sunday
Monday

Good morning,

Winter continues on Mt. Hood today, as the snow level hovers around 1500′ and snow continues falling from the sky. Wind will be quite strong early: SW 35-40, swinging to W45-50 by 8am, dropping to 30-40 by 11am, going to SW 20-25 by 2pm and then slowly decreasing to SW 10ish in the evening. We’ll have .3-.4” water value this morning, for 4-5” of new snow, with skies becoming partly cloudy this afternoon.

Light snow flurries fall under partly cloudy skies tonight, Saturday, for .1-.2” water value and 1-2” of new snow by Sunday morning. We’ll see snow Sunday morning, for .2-.3” WV, 3-4” of new, by 2pm, when we’ll have flurries and partly cloudy skies. The snow level will be at 500-1000′ on Sunday, and wind will be light and variable early, picking up to NW 10-15 by 11am and W 15-20 in the afternoon.

Monday starts off with the snow level at the surface in the Gorge and 500′ elsewhere, rising to 500′ by mid-morning. We’ll have .2-.3” WV during the day, for 3-4” of new snow on Mt. Hood, with skies becoming partly clear in the afternoon. Wind will be SW 20-25 early, going to W 15-20 by 11am and 10-15 by 5pm.

The weather becomes quite interesting in Tuesday, as a big, wet, warm system swings our way. Precip starts around 2am with the snow level at 500′ or less (sorry, Gorge and Hood River Valley), with that warm air mass moving overhead. By 8am, we’ll see temps at -2/-3C from 0-10,000′. That’s a recipe for either very wet snow or more likely freezing rain on Mt. Hood, and possibly in the HR Valley too. By 11am, the free air freezing level will be at 5500′, meaning whatever is going on at low elevations will switch to rain. On the mountain… tough call. My gut says freezing rain, but we’re going to have to wait until we get closer. Either way, we’ll see significant moisture: 1” by 4pm, a break, and then 1-2” WV overnight into Wednesday. We’ll also see wind: SW 40ish, picking up to SW 50ish.

After that, it’s looking like we’ll head back into cold and snowy weather for Mt. Hood.

Today might be St. Patrick’s Day, but don’t party too hard. You have a Post Canyon work party to attend tomorrow from 9-1pm. Bring a helmet, because they are required. Also tomorrow, NW Demo Tour at Meadows. Monday evening at 5:30 at HR City Hall is the cable park meeting. Be there with your argument for or against.

Have an awesome day.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – 5000′
4a-8a 8a-12p 12p-4p 4p-8p 8p-4a
Friday
Saturday
Sunday

Good morning,

It’s Friday, TGIF, and that means it’s time for more snow on Mt. Hood. The snow level will be around 1500-2000′ this morning, rising to 3000′ by 2pm and 4000′ by 8pm. Wind today will be SW 30-35 early, dropping to 15-20 by 2pm. As a big low pressure system approaches the coast, the wind will turn to S/SW 20-30, then swing E/SE 25-30 late in the evening. We’ll have snow flurries this morning for .1-.2” WV and 1-3” of snow, followed by a break midday, when we’ll see partly cloudy to high overcast sky. Snow starts again by 11pm.

We’ll have .3-.4” WV overnight, for 3-4” of snow by 4am Saturday, with another .4-.5” by 4pm for 5-7” of new snow during the day. The snow level on Saturday will be 1000′ early, rising to 2000′ mid-morning and falling back to 1000′ by early afternoon. Wind will be S/SE/E 20-25 early, going to SW 25-30 by 5am and 20-25 by 8am. As this low pressure system clears the area and high pressure builds at the coast, we’ll see the wind swing to the west at 35-40 by 11am, 20-25 by 2pm and WNW 30-35 by 5pm. Light snow flurries continue overnight.

Sunday morning starts off with 1” or less of new snow and clear skies or high overcast skies, becoming cloudy, with light snow flurries in the afternoon. The snow level will be less than 500′ at 5am, rising to 1000′ by 2pm. Wind will be W 5-10, picking up to 10-15 in the afternoon.

Monday starts off with light snow flurries, both on Mt. Hood and all the way down to the Columbia River, with the snow level at the surface early, rising to 500′ in the afternoon. Mt. Hood wind will be SW 15-25 all day. Total precip will be .2-.3” WV during the day, for 2-4” of new snow.

Tuesday looks marginal, at least in the Oregon Cascades, but I’m thinking of heading up north, where things might be a bit colder…

Your Gorge wind situation will be easterly today and westerly tomorrow, with gusty 24-28+ in the eastern Gorge tomorrow all day long.

Coming up this weekend, Meadows hosts the NW Demo Tour, with free ski and snowboard demos on Sunday. Hood River Area Trail Stewards (a 501c3), hosts a work party at Family Man on Sunday. Also Sunday, it’s women’s ride day at Mountain View, with Specialized demos and mini clinics. Finally, don’t forget about the cable park meeting on Monday, 5:30, at Hood River City Hall.
