That boring weather we had last week is going to give way to some really interesting weather over the next 72 hours. The freezing level is basically at the surface in the Gorge, but there are pockets of above-freezing air around too. With precip headed toward the Gorge, this doesn’t bode well for the afternoon. Expect snow or freezing rain to start around 1pm (likely freezing rain in Odell/Parkdale/etc and snow down low), with .1-.2” water value accumulation (an inch or two of snow or a tenth or two of ice) between 1am and 4pm and about .1-.3” more between 4pm today and 4am Sunday. With east wind through Sunday morning, it’s going to be all frozen precip tonight.

Tomorrow looks dry in the Gorge after 7am, with temps climbing just over freezing. That will make it easy for you to get to Dirty Fingers to watch the Seahawks game at 1:20pm! The next problem comes Monday morning, with light east flow through the Gorge and warm air over top. Expect freezing rain through 11am before a switch to rain, accompanied by strong west wind in the afternoon. Expect 1”+ rain Monday followed by another 1” on Tuesday. At least all the snow will melt! But then the rivers will flood, as Mt. Hood is also going to get a couple of inches of rain out of this system.

The same messy weather is going to hit Mt. Hood. With temps fluctuating like crazy this morning, it’s hard to say exactly what’s going to happen. Models predict cold air at 10k, so I’m going to go out on a limb and call for snow, with the snow level around 4000′. Snow will start around 1pm, with .2” water value (WV) by 4pm, for 1-2” of snow, followed by .3-.4” WV by 4am, for 3-4” of snow by Sunday morning. Wind today will be S 15-25 early, becoming SSW 20-25 by 1pm and holding all day.

Sunday morning starts off with a few flurries through 10am, becoming partly cloudy, with a more solid cloud deck moving in mid-afternoon. The snow level will be 1500′. Precip starts back up around 1am Monday (more on that later). Wind on Sunday will be SW 20 early, W 20-25 at 7am, NW 15 in the afternoon, and SW 15 in the evening.

All hell breaks loose on Monday. Precip on Mt. Hood starts as freezing rain around 1am, becoming rain by 4am. The snow level will be 7000′ early, 8000′ at 7am, falling back to 7000′ around 1pm and 6000′ for the rest of the night. Wind will be SW 35 early, W 40 at 4am, W 50 at 7am and WNW 55 at 1pm. Total rain will be 1.8-2.0” by 4pm, with another1-1.5” overnight.

Tuesday starts with more heavy rain, with the freezing level at 6000′ early and 5000′ at 10am. The snow level will fall to 1500′ at 1pm. Mt. Hood gets 1.2” WV before 1pm, for a mix of rain and snow and maybe 2-6” of new. After that, another 1.5-2.0” WV falls as snow, for 16-20” of new by Wednesday morning. Heavy snow continues through Wednesday.

Well, the freezing rain finally arrived, later than precicted, but in an interesting turn of events, it stayed above and west of Hood River. It’s currently freezing rain from Parkdale on up to 8000′ or so, which is making a real mess of things at the ski resorts where they’ve had around .5” of ice. Hood River, at least as of the time of this report, was sneaking by with light snow. The precip should end by 10am, at the very latest, with low clouds likely in the Gorge today along with east wind at 25-30.

In the Gorge tomorrow, expect some snow starting around 10am, or if we’re really lucky, freezing rain, but this one looks more like snow. However, models are in complete disagreement over precip amounts tomorrow, so let’s just call it an inch or two of snow at the most, along with east wind at 30-40+.

It looks like we’ll see light wind on Sunday, returning to east wind on Monday and Tuesday, which, depending on the strength of the east wind, could pose a big problem as the next warm and wet system rides above the cold air Monday night.

On Mt. Hood this morning, it’s freezing rain. I thought for sure the temp gradient would support snow up high and freezing rain down low, but nope, that’s not the case. Even NOAA was surprised when I talked to them! Expect the mountain precip to completely end this afternoon, with occasional freezing rain and/or flurries through 4pm. Total precip will be around .1-.2” for the rest of today. Temps will be above freezing between 500-3500′ or so, with the freezing level stabilizing at 2500′ early afternoon and rising to 6500′ this evening. However, the temp will hold right around 32 degrees, even below those freezing levels. Wind today will be W 15-20 early, swinging to SW 10 mid-afternoon.

Saturday starts with high clouds, with light snow flurries moving in around 10am. Total precip will be .1” water value (WV) by 4pm and another .1” (WV) by 4am. That said, models are still all over the place on precip amounts, even this close in, so this could change drastically. The freezing level will be 5500′ early, falling to 3500′ midday and 1500′ in the evening. Temps below those levels will hover between 32-34 degrees, so snow is possible all the way down to the surface. Wind Saturday will be S 20 early, SSW 20-30 midday and 20-25 in the evening.

Sunday brings more snow to the mountain. The snow level will be 1500′ early, dropping to 500′ or less by 1pm. We’ll see .3” WV between 10am and 4pm, for 3-4” of snow, followed by another .2” by 4am Monday, for another 2-3” of new. Wind on Sunday will be SW 15 all day long.

Monday looks partly cloudy in the morning with precip moving in around 4pm. If models are right – and they’ve sure been a pain lately, but they’re better than nothing – this storm will come in hard, warm, and wet. Once again, let’s wait and see…
