Good morning,
Just a friendly reminder from my friends at Hood River Rotary: Tonight is the annual Rotary Ski Night at Meadows. Tickets for skiing from 3-9pm are just $10 in advance, $15 at the gate. You can purchase advance tickets now and support a great cause, whether you plan on going or not.
I’d like to strongly encourage you to go up to the mountain today, just to hang out. It’s going to be warm and sunny up there, and cold and gloomy down here. Even if you don’t ski or ride, you can take a book and hang out in the sun on the deck at Timberline or Meadows. (btw, this report is brought to you this morning by the kindness of Timberline’s mountain manager, who is letting me poach his internet – oh, the irony!)
In other news, the White Salmon Bike Park folks have a work party from 9am-2pm today. I know it’s hard to motivate to get out there in the cold, gloomy weather, but your body will warm up once you start working. Your soul will warm up too, as you give back to your community by building a rad bike park!

In wind news, nuclear force wind continues in the western Gorge today, with the gradient at .20 and iWindsurf’s sensor reading 47mph at Rooster Rock. Strong easterlies continue tomorrow at 30+ and they’ll continue through Wednesday midday. Those Wednesday easterlies will make a mess of the Gorge, with 1-3” of snow falling before the wind switches around Wednesday afternoon, switching the precip to rain. Expect snow to start falling around 10am Wednesday morning.
On Mt. Hood today, it will be sunny and warm, with the free air freezing level at 10,000′ and high temps near 50° . Wind will be W 10-15 early, rising to 15-20 in the afternoon.
Tomorrow looks clear and sunny in the morning, with the FAF at 12,000′ and high temps at 45° in the morning, falling to 40° in the afternoon when high clouds start moving in. Wind tomorrow will be SW 15 early, rising to SW 20-30 midday.
The pattern change kicks in Wednesday morning. The day starts off cloudy, with the snow level at 5500′ at 7am, dropping to 3000′ at 10am and 2000′ in the afternoon. Snow starts sometime around 7am or as late as 10am. Around .4-.6” water value (WV) falls between 7am and 4pm, with no more than an additional .1” after that time period. This should give us 5-6” of new snow, and it’s going to come in fairly cold and dry, so probably won’t bond well to the snowpack. Wind on Wednesday will be SSW 40-50 early, SW 30 at 10am and WNW 35 at 4pm.
Thursday looks partly cloudy on the mountain, with a few flurries possible, but no real accumulation. The freezing level will be around 1000′, and wind will be WNW 20mph.
The next system moves in Thursday night, but at this point, it looks too warm to remain snow for the entire frontal passage. Details as we get closer.
