Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! A good time was had in the eastern Gorge yesterday, and another good time will be had on the river today. Even stronger wind is forecast for Monday. After that, we’ll probably lose the wind for a day or two – depends on the exact placement of the heat low incoming this week. With the metro area pushing 90, it’s likely we’ll go calm or even light easterly for a day or two. The lack of wind shouldn’t last too long. Models hint at a return Thursday afternoon, and they’re currently all-in on a big day next Sunday. But as we all know, anything beyond two or three days out is subject to change.
For Sunday, the river starts nearly calm. Pressures at 7am (knowing it wouldn’t be windy early, I slept in) were 30.11/30.09/30.06 for gradients of 0.02 and 0.03. That’s not enough for wind, and the river agrees. Don’t worry. Wind will come. As a trough shifts east and keeps the metro area cold and gray, the desert warms up. By early afternoon, or maybe even late morning, we should have 18-21 from Stevenson to Doug’s. For the afternoon session, models knock the Hatch down to 14-17 and hold everything else between Stevenson and Doug’s at 20-23. The executive session has a chance to see a few more mph. River flow over the last 24 hours was 139-209kcfs (155-209 at Rufus), river temp is 61.88F, and high temp forecast is 65F.
Unseasonably cool air remains entrenched on the west side on Monday, and the Columbia Basin heats up like a dashboard in the sun. Dawn Patrol wind has a post-frontal flavor with 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier (a deep marine layer will be present), and 21-24 from Lyle to Arlington. The wind builds from there. Stevenson to Hood River climbs to 21-24 by mid-morning and holds. Areas to the east shine: westerlies build to 28-31+ from Lyle to Threemile in the afternoon.
The trough (trust me, it’s a thing) starts its exit eastward on Tuesday, and a ridge (it’s also a thing) starts to build. This results in temps and pressures equalizing across the Cascades. If that happens, the wind will shut down. Gut instinct says reality might outperform models, but let’s wait until tomorrow to see what models say.
Extended: we’re probably in for a couple days of light wind or light easterlies as heat settles in across the Pacific Northwest. There are hints of a return to west wind late Thursday. If that happens, it’ll be because the ridge/heat low has shifted east. Once it does, we should stay in a west wind pattern. Ensembles have locked in on Sunday as The Day the Temps Drop, meaning the day the wind returns with a vengeance. Is it too early to lock your schedule in and clear it? Probably. But you could go ahead and clear next Sunday and Monday, as models show potential for both. Have a great day on the river today!

There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. On June 25th, Brave Endeavors hosts a pride MTB ride at Post Canyon at 5:30pm. June 30th is Vortex #3, a paddling race.
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. With 0.24” to 0.60” of rain in the last 24 hours, Post is probably slippery and maybe even muddy. Maybe give it a day? Post, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Nestor are open. Eightmile, Knebal, Bottle Prairie, Surveyor’s, Dog River, Sueprconnector, and Cook Meadows are open. Fifteenmile is clear of snow but has not been cleared of downed trees. Lewis River is open. I received an email that Falls Creek is open. That is USFS land, and E-bikes are not allowed. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral.
