Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! Thanks to longer-lasting, deeper marine clouds than anticipated yesterday, the Hatch way over-performed for a couple hours in the morning. Sounds like lots of you took advantage of the wind – reports I received had the Hatch totally parked out and crowded on the water. Models are struggling with today’s forecast – we’ll talk about that below. Sunday is looking light, but westerlies return on Monday and Tuesday and likely Wednesday as well. The GFS pegs Monday as the windiest day, but the Euro is all-in on Tuesday being windier. So… my recommendation would be to do both!
Saturday morning started with pressures of 30.17/30.12/30.09 with the pressures east of Hood River rapidly climbing and knocking down the gradients. The metro area and western Gorge started the day cloudy. All that was providing enough support for 17-20mph at Viento to start the day with light/variable wind everywhere else including the Hatch. We should see a few hours of 14-17mph from Viento to Hood River this morning, but models take the wind below 10mph by late morning or early afternoon.
Our only hope for better is if the metro-area marine clouds last longer than expected; they did so yesterday, and they could do so today. River flow over the last 24 hours was 60-78kcfs, river temp is 67.5F, and high temp forecast is 82F and mostly sunny.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
Sunday starts with calm wind or perhaps 10-13mph from Viento to Swell if we’re lucky. Light westerlies persist all day and never climb above 15mph. High temp: 84F and sunny.
On Monday, high pressure returns offshore, marine clouds lend a helping hand on the west side, and a heat low materializes in the desert. Quite a bit of uncertainty is present in the models, but we’re likely to see 24-27mph from Stevenson to Mosier in the morning, filling in to Avery in the afternoon. Similarly strong westerlies are probable on Tuesday. As a front/trough approaches in the afternoon, the wind should fill in out to Rufus, but you’ll probably be tired by then after enjoying the Stevenson-Doug’s stretch all day!
Somewhat less wind, but still “enough” is likely on Wednesday. After that, uncertainty soars, and it’s not possible to make any precision forecasts. So that’s gonna have to be it for now. If you want near-guaranteed wind all through the week, you could try the south coast – the forecast looks solid down there at least until the end of this week. Have fun out there, folks. Good morning, neighbors! Another sunny, warm, late summer day is on tap. Better make the most of it, because there are only a few more days of summer left. Autumn starts on Tuesday. While the weather will (coincidentally) be cooler starting Tuesday, warm, dry weather is likely to continue all through the week. A tiny chance of rain exists next weekend, but it’s pretty darn unlikely any of us will get wet.
One result of dry, calm clear mornings is that radiational cooling grabs hold of Glenwood. It’s 39 there to start Saturday. Gives folks an excuse to loll about in bed with the cats and dogs and piles of blankets. The rest of us started today +/- 50 degrees with our first partial Nothing of the season. Yay? Afternoon highs reach 81 in Stevenson, 82 in Hood River, 86 in The Dalles, and 82 in Pasco. We should see west wind around 20mph this morning. Assuming the metro-area clouds burn off as early as predicted, the wind will drop below 15mph this afternoon and potentially fall below 10mph.
Sunday looks a little warmer to start: 50-60 for most of us and a little warmer to finish: 84-88, hottest in The Dalles. Wind will be 10-15mph out of the west from Viento to Hood River early, but will quickly fade to “light” wind, which is when the motion of the air molecules slows enough that they emit light. But that light is a spectrum that human eyes cannot see, so it doesn’t really matter. What does matter: the air (and the river) will be moving less. Sky will be clear all day. End of story.
On Monday, we’ll have a few high clouds to start (pretty sunrise!) and lots of high clouds to finish. Low temps: 55-65. High temps: 78/81/87/85. As usual, a high temp drop results in increased wind. Westerlies will be 20-25mph all day west of The Dalles, potentially more. East of The Dalles to Rufus, we’re likely to see 15-20mph in the afternoon.
Tuesday looks very similar to Monday but a few degrees cooler and probably windier. Wednesday: also similar, but a touch cooler and a touch less windy. As we move into the latter half of next week, temps keep dropping a degree or two each day. A slight chance of rain is possible, especially west of Hood River, in the Friday-Sunday time period, but only about 40% of the ensemble members off up rain, and most of those just offer up a trace. Clouds are more likely than rain. And rain is more likely than snow. And snow is darned unlikely this time of year. Hopefully we have more snow this winter than we did last year! Safe travels. -TATAS
