Gorge Wind Forecast
A hot weekend is coming up for the Gorge. Along with a heat we’ll see wind in the “not much” category with the exception of easterlies on Saturday. Those easterlies will likely come with smoke from the Mosier Fire and 100 degree temps. Let’s look at the details, shall we?
Light gradients and light wind start Friday. Today’s forecast highs are 88 for Hood River and 86 for Portland, a smaller gap than yesterday’s forecast (which I wrote but forgot to post/send). These changes mean lighter wind. While Viento is in the teens (as always) this morning, the rest of the Gorge is in the 3-7 range. That’s all we’ll see for the morning, and we might see the river go calm midday. While models predict a switch to east flow this afternoon, I think we’ll still see W 4-8 or so between Stevenson and Hood River, maybe Mosier. East of there, light easterlies kick in at 5mph or less. River flow is 124kcfs and temp is 68 degrees. High temp: 88.
A heat low moves up the coast on Saturday and sends the Metro area into the triple digits. Offshore flow results. Expect morning westerlies at 15-20 from Rooster to Viento with calm wind east of Swell. Afternoon: 20-25 from Rooster to Stevenson, 15-20 near Viento, 5-10 at Swell, 5 Hood River to Mosier, 10mph east of The Dalles. High temp: 97. Air quality: smoky west of Mosier.
Sunday starts with E 10-15 from Rooster to Viento with calm wind elsewhere. Midday looks calm all through the Gorge. Evening wind turns to W 5-10 from Stevenson to Mosier, perhaps to The Dalles as well. High temp: 100. Chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon too. Temps drop about 7 degrees on Monday and westerlies return in the low to mid 20’s for the western Gorge.
Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death.
