Gorge Wind Forecast

Very hot weather and light wind is the forecast for the weekend as a ridge settles over the Northwest. Westerlies return on Monday and stick around at least through Tuesday. Deets: Saturday starts with light east gradients as a heat low sets up across the western half of Cascadia. Easterlies peak at 20-25 near Stevenson late morning. Rooster will probably (but not certainly) join in with 15-20. Same for Viento. In the afternoon, the easterlies fade to 10-15 between Rooster and Viento and pick up to E5 near Hood River and E 10 east of there. River flow is 140kcfs. Temp is 70 degrees. High temp today: 97+

Sunday looks pretty awful weather-wise, and there won’t be much wind either! Hot and muggy all day with light wind. Morning: light east flow, probably not even enough to call wind. Midday: E 10-15 from Stevenson to Viento. Afternoon: W 10-13 from Stevenson to The Dalles, possibly interrupted or changed by high-based thunderstorms. High temp: 100.

Monday may start with another round of thunderstorms. Instability of some sort sticks around all day, but because it’s high-based, it may not have too detrimental an effect on the wind. Minus lightning chances, of course! Expect morning westerlies at 18-22 from Viento to Mosier with 13-16 east of there, all the way to Arlington. Late morning brings a brief period of 22-25 from Viento to Mosier before a drop to 13-16. west of Mosier. Afternoon: 13-16 in the west and 22-25 from Mosier to Rufus. As of this morning, Tuesday’s looking like 23-26.

Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Mt. Hood Meadows allows hiking within the permit area. However, you will need to park outside their parking lots. Timberline is open for lift-serve skiing with exemplary guidelines for protecting guests and staff from the transmission of novel coronavirus. Please read their guidelines and rules here. Well done, T-Line! The Mt. Hood weather forecast will be on vacation unless something interesting happens in the weather up there. Timberline is allowing uphill access outside the permit area on the climbers’ trail only.

Cycling

8/14: Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and Underwood are closed due to fire danger. Respect the closures. Road and gravel news: Due to the Mosier Fire, there is no access to Dry Creek, Osburne Cutoff, Carroll Road, Mosier Creek Road, or other roads in the area. Given significant numbers of fire vehicles on the road, it’s best to avoid the area completely. Motorized report: as of 8/1, Post Canyon is closed to motorized use due to fire danger. Other Post news: Eldorado is closed about 100 yards before the Mixed Tape intersection due to timber harvesting. HRATS will be putting in a short hike-a-bike to Uptrack to allow for riding up to the top of Bad Motor Scooter.
