Gorge Wind Forecast
Not-quite-ideal, but still windy weather continues for the next couple of days. Moderate westerlies Sunday and Monday back off on Tuesday and return Wednesday through Friday with a shot at a stronger day in the eastern Gorge for Thursday.
Sunday involves clear sky for most of the day with an approaching trough dragging in high clouds this evening. Before we see the influence of that system on the sky, we’ll feel it in the wind. Expect gusty westerlies that underperform today. Morning wind will be in the 14-18 range from Viento to Swell with 10-13 or so at other locations, even all the way to Arlington. We’ll see the wind pick up this afternoon as desert heating outpaces city heating. Expect gusty 21-25 from Viento to Doug’s midday, filling in to Rufus in the afternoon. Stevenson will be 18-23, and Arlington will probably hold at 10-13, maybe a touch more. River flow is 165kcfs and temp is 69 degrees.
That trough moves through on Monday for another day of inconsistent westerlies. Morning wind will be 18-21 from Viento to Hood River with 10-13 to the east and west. Afternoon wind looks like 21-24 from Stevenson to Rufus. Make that “gusty” 21-24. Tuesday starts out much lighter, perhaps with 7-10. While the models aren’t calling for much in the afternoon, temp difference across the Cascades suggests otherwise. Let’s call it 14-17 from Stevenson to Mosier, possibly to Doug’s. Wednesday: gusty 23-28. Thursday: cloudy and maybe even wet in the western Gorge with gusty 27-33 east of The Dalles.
Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, further restrictions are now in place. Remember: crowds lead to closures. First, kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Third, Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you are likely to be ticketed. Next, parking has been further reduced along the waterfront – various restrictions are in place due to crowding at Frog Beach. The Nichols boat dock remains closed due to crowding.
