Gorge Wind Forecast
Weather systems continue to plow into the Northwest for the next week or so, bring periods of rain and gusty west wind. The best chance of somewhat reliable wind is Friday afternoon following the passage of a cold front.
For Wednesday, expect a showery day in the west. The wind starts off calm near Hood River with 15-20 near Viento and 10-15 east of The Dalles. As a weather system moves through today, the wind will pick up: gusty 12-15 from Stevenson to Viento with 15-20 near Viento at times. The central Gorge will be nearly calm, but may see 5-8 this afternoon. Avery to Arlington ends up with gusty 22-26 today. River flow is 96,600 and river temp is 57 degrees.
Thursday sees additional rain in the west. As this system moves inland, the wind picks up. West 5-10 in the morning builds to 10-15 from Stevenson to Viento, calm wind from Hood River to The Dalles, and gusty 19-23 from Avery to Arlington.
A strong cold front moves through midday Friday and high pressure builds off the coast. This combo should give us the best chance for reliable westerlies that we’ve seen in a while. The day starts with 10-13 in the far west, calm wind near Hood River, and 22-26 east of The Dalles. By late morning, we should have gusty 20-23 form Stevenson to The Dalles with 26-30+ from Avery to Arlington. I threw that plus in there because very strong upper level wind could translate to 30-35 for a period of time at river level as well. Saturday looks mellower: dry with light westerlies.
JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: now on vacation for the fall and winter. Will return in spring.
Random Morning Thoughts
Mt. Hood Mountain Weather Forecast
Mt. Hood received about a foot of snow over the last few days, but now we’re back into a period of warmer weather. That warmth will unfortunately been accompanied by quite a bit of moisture, all of which will fall as rain below about 8000′. In addition, NW flow will increase the rainfall rate due to orographic enhancement.
Wednesday will be rainy. Snow level: 9000′-10000′. About .7” rain falls during the day. An additional .5” falls overnight. Wind will be WNW 30 in the morning, 40 in the afternoon, and NW 25 overnight. Thursday also looks rainy, but the intensity of the rain will decrease in the afternoon. Snow level 9000′ early, 12,000′ midday, and 10,000′ overnight. Rainfall totals: .4” daytime, .1-.2” overnight. Wind: NW 25 early, W 35 in the afternoon, W 50 overnight.
Friday looks very wet and also very windy. Snow level: 10,000′ falling to 8000′. Rainfall: 1.1” daytime, .1” overnight. Those totals could double due to orographics. Wind will be W 5o early, WNW 50 daytime, WNW 40 evening, and NW 30 overnight. Saturday looks mostly dry. The next round of rain arrives late Saturday or early Sunday. This looks like another round of warm, heavy rainfall.

Road and Mountain Biking
Now it is too wet to ride most places without sliding and crashing and also, most likely, damaging the trails due to muddy conditions. It has been snowing above 4500′ (it’s raining now), so be prepared for snow on high elevation trails. Upcoming Post Canyon trail work parties (all meet at Family Man at 9:30am): November 4, November 17.
Upcoming Events
Today’s events: community yoga at 9am at Samadhi in White Salmon. All-ages touch rugby at 11am at the Hood River Marina. Today’s the Scary Run in Washougal at 8am (WET) and Cyclocross races in Cascade Locks from 8:30 to 3pm (MUDDY). If you want to watch those races and cheer for the locals, the Dirty Fingers tent will be available to protect you from the rain. I believe they will also have warm beverages. Next Sunday, horror of horrors, is the switch to Daylight Savings Time.
