Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)

Yesterday ended up being a lovely day on the water. If you made it out there, awesome! If not, it looks like we’ll see some wind this weekend, so don’t panic! Today’s starting off with enough wind and gradients to get you out there: .07 (pdx-dls), .03 (dls-psc) and .36 (eph-dls). While the models suggest we’ll only see 13-16 today, the Columbia is beating that in many locations, with an average of 21 at Swell pre-7am (thanks, iWindsurf/iKitesurf for that info).

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.

Given the gradients, early morning wind speeds, and the fact that a ridge is building over the PNW, I’m going with 17-20 today, all day. You’ll find that from Viento to Hood River early and from Stevenson to Mosier this afternoon. The eastern Gorge has mid-teens this morning, but that’s going to fade as high pressure builds in today.

Tomorrow sees high pressure over the region in the morning with increasing SW flow in the afternoon. That’ll give us light and variable wind early with gusty 12-15 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Mosier. Saturday sees a complicated weather picture that leaves us with 16-19 east of HR in the morning with gusty 23-26 in the afternoon. Model predictions for Sunday have been all over the place; as of this morning, it looks like we’ll end up with 21-24 Sunday afternoon.

Coast forecast (north/central/south). Today: 5-10/20-25/30-40, W swell 3′ @ 7 seconds. Tomorrow: 10-15/10-15/30-35, W 4′ @ 9. Saturday: Light and variable, W 4′ @ 9.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 22-25. Jones tomorrow, 21-24. Jones Saturday, 10-13. Sauvie’s today, 9-12. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 12-15. Sauvie’s Saturday, light.

Random Morning Thoughts

As usual this morning, my mind is full of opinions and facts and snippets of books and articles I’ve read over the last couple of days. I’d like to share one of those articles with you. Last week (I think) I brought up the idea that it’s important to base your opinions in facts. It turns out there’s an article making the rounds of the interwebs discussing what constitutes an opinion and what constitutes ignorance.

Instead of paraphrasing, I’ll let you read it, because I love the points it makes. If the truth is out there to be found, look for it, because it will lead to more productive conversations. Truth, of course is relative, and not all scientific studies are accurate or reliable or valid (for example, the studies used to change things in the DSM-5 had low reliability and validity, but that’s another story).

Truth is not to be found in blog posts. In news articles, it is often twisted to promote an agenda. When you base your opinions on other peoples’ rambling thoughts (including mine), you do yourself a disservice. Do your own research on the subjects that fire you up. Don’t just parrot the opinions of others, because you may just be spreading propaganda. When you read an article, read the references, and if there aren’t references, be skeptical, because you are reading an opinion, not factual evidence.

I’ll leave you with one example, the NYT article involving falling in love by asking 36 questions. That article started that part of the original research study required starting into someone’s eyes for 4 minutes. That was NOT part of the original research study. And now there are millions of people starting at each other in search of true love.

Be careful what you believe. Argue your opinions from a place of fact, not the opinions of others. And have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s sunny again this morning in Hood River, and will remain sunny all day today. Expect temps in the low 60’s early and low 80’s this afternoon. Light wind. Tomorrow also looks sunny for much of the day, but we may see an influx of high clouds in the afternoon, followed by some mid-level clouds and a very slight chance of sprinkles overnight. That should leave us with a beautiful sunrise tomorrow night. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and mid 80’s in the afternoon with light wind. Expect partly cloudy sky on Saturday with temps in the low 60’s early and low 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate wind in the afternoon. 1% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks a little cooler and possibly a little cloudier… otherwise… a lot like Saturday.

Road and Mountain Biking

Tonight’s the race-pace Post n’ Pint at the same time. Tomorrow night at 5pm, Anson’s Bike Buddies has a bike repair and bike washing party behind Cascade Eye Center in Hood River. If you have a used bike taking up space in your world, bring it down and donate it, and they’ll get it to a kid in need. If you want to go road biking, I highly recommend tomorrow morning. Light wind. Cool temps. Yummy.

Royal Anne Organics: U-Pick Dahlias & Seed garlic

Sometimes you just need a big bunch of flowers. Maybe you need some cheer. Maybe a friend needs some cheer. Head to Hood River U-Pick off Markham Road (4320 Royal Anne Drive) and pick your own big bouquet of flowers. While you’re there, check out the certified organic seed garlic at the same location. Garlic is easy to grow, it’s fun to harvest, and even your black thumb can’t kill it. Haven’t gardened before? Garlic is a great first plant. Get some now and give it a shot!

Upcoming Events

Today’s Thursday, and that means there’s a free foundational flow yoga class at Flow at 8am. That happens every Thursday if you missed it today. Coming up later on today, there’s the Post n’ Pint mountain bike ride from Dirty Fingers at 5:30 – if you do the ride, they’ll give you a pint of beer. There’s also a free yoga class at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30 tonight.

In family-friendly bike news, Anson’s Bike Buddies has a bike repair and washing party behind Cascade Eye Center in Hood River this evening from 5pm to 8pm. They’ll be fixing up bikes to give to local kids in need, so bring your kids along and help out!

In other news, the Kickstand Coffee Run leaves 13th and State in Hood River tomorrow at 7am. Do that run, and you get a cup of coffee and a donut. Tomorrow night is First Friday in Hood River, and Saturday is movies in the Park, with Surf’s up on the big screen at Jackson Park.

Have an awesome day today!
