Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)

First off, before I forget, some unpleasant windsurfing-related news. As of last night, there was a wildfire burning near Roosevelt, SR-14 was closed, and Roosevelt was under an evacuation notice. Fingers crossed for those folks. That may impact your windsport opportunities today. More importantly, I encourage you to think about donating supplies to families in need, should that become necessary. Roosevelt provides us with a lovely beach; perhaps we can do something in return.

Now, your forecast. It’s a nice morning setup out there, and I’d encourage you to make the most of the Corridor as early as possible. An approaching shortwave will likely disrupt the western Gorge wind and send you chasing unicorns in the desert. 7am gradients, should you be interested in such things, were .12 (pdx-dls), .05 (dls-psc) and .45 (eph-dls) with a river water temp of 71 degrees. In addition, there were lots of marine clouds west of Hood River, always a good sign.

So, expect a quick build to 26-30 today from Swell east to Arlington. Then you can expect the wind to drop and become gusty between Swell and Lyle, with 28-32 from Lyle eastward until sunset. Steven’s Locks will take a while to warm up today, but should join with 24-28 if the clouds burn off. There is a 99.99% chance it will be epic east of Hood River after 2pm today, because I have a 4pm appointment in Portland. Enjoy the fabulous day on the water!

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.

Tomorrow sees the low pressure system providing us with clouds and gradients more to the east. That’ll leave us with 10-13 early and 17-20 in the afternoon, strongest near Hood River. Friday starts off light and picks up to 13-16, also strongest near Hood River.

As of right now, the weekend forecast is still in flux, especially Sunday. That said, we’ll have low pressure off the coast and an approaching front on Saturday, for gusty 24-28. Sunday looks like gusty 15-18. Again, that’s a long ways out to be forecasting.

Coast (north/central/south). Today: 5-10/10-15/25-30, NW sell 3′ @ 7 seconds. Tomorrow: 5-10/10-15/30-35, NW 3 @ 8. Friday: 10-15/10-15/30-35, W 3 @ 9.

Jones and Sauvie’s beta test forecast: Jones today, 15-18. Jones tomorrow, 10-13. Jones Friday, 22-25. Sauvie’s today, 9-11. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 5-8. Sauvie’s Friday, 9-11.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Nothing to say here today.

Random Morning Thoughts

So often when we listen to our friends talk about their troubles, we end the conversation with a comment like, “Oh, it’s going to be all right,” or, “You’ll be okay,” or, “It’s all going to work out.” While those statements may feel good too us, and may sound encouraging to our ears, they probably feel crappy to our friends. People are just looking for someone to understand that they are upset. And they are likely upset because they feel that things won’t work out and that they won’t be okay.

So, why do we say these things? I suspect that on one level, it’s because we want the conversation to end; the comments are conversation stoppers, for sure. After all, who’s going to turn back to a friend and say, “You don’t know that I’ll be okay, and I feel shittier now. I need you to acknowledge that this sucks.”

So what is the right thing to say when you want to tell someone it’ll be okay? Don’t ask me!!! Ask your heart!

If your heart hurts for your friend, say, “My heart hurts for you. This sounds hard.” Or, “I wish I could tell you it’d be okay, but I can’t, so just know I love you and I’m here for you.” The key here is to listen to your heart and not just drop some pithy cliché. Take a few moments to listen, because hearts speak slowly and quietly. But when they do speak, they speak the truth, and the people you speak to will know that. They’ll feel heard, and they’ll feel comforted, and maybe they’ll even have an awesome day because of what you said!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s clear and sunny from Hood River eastward today, but we may see some additional high clouds this afternoon as a weak weather system tags BC. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. Tomorrow starts off with temps in the upper 50’s and warms to the low 80’s. Moderate wind. Friday starts off in the low 60’s and ends up in the mid 80’s. Light wind, slight chance of thunder. No rainbows for the 3 day period.

Road and Mountain Biking

Nothing has changed out there today: it’s windy on the road, and given the overall setup, shall remain so all day at all locations. Tonight’s the Post n’ Pinot women’s MTB ride at Dirty Fingers at 5:30, and tomorrow is the race-pace Post n’ Pint at the same time. Tomorrow night at 5pm, Anson’s Bike Buddies has a bike repair and bike washing party behind Cascade Eye Center in Hood River. If you have a used bike taking up space in your world, bring it down and donate it, and they’ll get it to a kid in need.

Royal Anne Organics: U-Pick Dahlias & Seed garlic

Sometimes you just need a big bunch of flowers. Maybe you need some cheer. Maybe a friend needs some cheer. Head to Hood River U-Pick off Markham Road (4320 Royal Anne Drive) and pick your own big bouquet of flowers. While you’re there, check out the certified organic seed garlic at the same location. Garlic is easy to grow, it’s fun to harvest, and even your black thumb can’t kill it. Haven’t gardened before? Garlic is a great first plant. Get some now and give it a shot!

Upcoming Events

Tonight’s a busy one for events. At 5:30 there’s a whitewater paddling group leaving Husum to run various sections of the White Salmon River, there’s the women’s Post n’ Pinot bike ride from Dirty Fingers Bike Shop, and there’s Ping Pong at Hood River’s Armory. Also at 5:20, it’s Families at Family man – you can take the kids and bikes to Family Man in Post Canyon for pizza and mountain biking.

If you want to do something with the kids and bikes tomorrow night, Anson’s Bike Buddies has a bike washing and bike fixing party behind Cascade Eye Center in Hood River from 5-8 with Andrew’s Pizza and Double Mountain beer.

Coming up later this week, it’s First Friday in Hood River. On Saturday evening at dusk, Surf’s Up plays at Jackson Park, and all weekend long, Cascade Locks has sailboat races. The following weekend is the Post Canyon 50k race and half marathon. If you’d like to do some awesome trail running at an awesome event put on by an awesome person, be there.

Have an awesome day today!
