7/8 Wind, nuking wind, and KB4C.

DSC_2057
I have two wind-related announcements to start off today. First, Kiteboarding for Cancer needs volunteers. If you want to help, you need to sign up by the end of the day today. Second, iWind/iKite has a free trial this weekend, Friday through Sunday. I don’t have a link for that, but I’m sure if you go to their website Friday, it’ll be prominently displayed. Those wind sensors sure are nice. Announcements are out of the way. On to your forecast, containing something for everyone. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

The day started off with westerlies in the teens through the whole Gorge with gradients of .11 (pdx-dls), .03 (dls-psc) and .40 (eph-dls). Models suggest we’ll see 15-18 pretty much all day from Viento to Mosier, with 17-21 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Doug’s. That’s all fine, but I think we’ll see a period of 20-23 from Viento to Mosier this morning before a midday lull and that previously mentioned late-day bump. There’s a slight chance of 22-25 late in the day at the Rowena stretch of the river. This morning’s 12-15 at Maryhill and Arlington should fade away, leaving those beaches with light wind after noon.

Things get complicated tomorrow as a couple of offshore lows shift around and combine with a low pressure trough. In addition, we’ll have an unstable atmosphere in the afternoon, leaving us with a chance of thunderstorms shutting down the wind. It looks windy, but you can expect it to be gusty and a bit unreliable. That said, we’ll see 15-18 for much of the day between Stevenson and The Dalles. Late in the day, after 2pm, or maybe even later, we’ll see the wind jump to 24-27 for 90 minutes or so, first at Swell, then at Doug’s, and so on all the way to Arlington.

Random Morning Thoughts

A friend of mine said something last night that I want to share. It’s unfortunate that I can’t convey his cadence and demeanor through email, because that’s part of the impact. So, read slowly and pause to consider. What he said, and I paraphrase, is, “If you’re not happy right here and now, you’re never going to be happy.”

So true.

Sure, more money and more friends and more time playing may lower your stress level, but the opposite of stress is not happiness. And a partner who cares may make you feel loved, but feeling love from outside is not happiness. Drinking a few pints of beer and smoking weed (while not bad), may make you feel giddy for a few hours, but temporary giddiness is not long-term happiness.

Sometimes we get confused, and we think that things outside us can make us feel better permanently. The truth is that outside stuff can only make us feel better temporarily. If you want your base state to be contentment, you have to learn to cultivate it from the inside. That happens when you approach each moment as an opportunity for joy, awe and amazement in the tiniest bits of reality. Concrete example: notice the feel of the wind on your bare skin and rejoice in that feeling.

Your unhappiness, stress and frustration can co-exist with your attempts to find happiness in other parts of your world. We can feel more than one thing at a time. But the more you cultivate positive emotions, even in the tiniest places, the more those positive emotions will spread through your life.

That’s enough for today. Enjoy the heat on your body this afternoon. =)

Road and Mountain Biking

There was a small wildfire along the lower part of Lost Lake Road yesterday. I’m not sure of the current status of that one, but that may affect your riding plans. Kingsley Road, much to my disappointment, is a furnace on a hot day. I tried to ride it yesterday and actually turned around. I haven’t done that in years. In other bike news, tonight is the women’s Post n’ Pinot ride at Dirty Fingers and tomorrow is the race-pace Post n’ Pint. If you want to watch the Tour, Dirty will have it on the TV. Finally, there’s a chance of rain on Sunday. Not a big chance, and not a lot of rain, but maybe a little rain, especially in the Cascades.
