Gorge Wind Forecast

As I write this, it’s Friday morning. I’m heading out on a meditation retreat today, and I’ll be back forecasting for you next Thursday. In order to help you plan, this forecast will include some extended forecast information. A heat wave for the early part of the week makes the long-range forecast a wee bit more reliable than usual, but still do take the information from Monday onward with a grain of salt.

All that said, Friday started off with whitecaps and a gradient of .11 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc) with moderate offshore high pressure and limited marine clouds to the west of the Gorge. There’s also a weak shortwave off the coast that will persist through Saturday, impacting wind quality and consistency. We’ll see 20-24 to start Friday from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 near Cascade Locks and 12-15 east of Mosier. By late morning, we’ll have 21-25 from Cascade Locks to Mosier, probably filling in to The Dalles by early afternoon. That said, there’s a good chance this offshore “thing” will make the wind inconsistent after late morning. If you see inconsistency near Hood River, check out Stevenson or Cascade Locks for better wind today. Also, today is the Laser Gorge Blowout, so watch for overpowered little boats between Cascade Locks and Hood River!

That “thing” remains offshore Saturday. Combine that with less marine clouds and less gradient for a slightly less windy day. Expect 16-19 from Viento to Hood River Saturday morning with 10-13 at Stevenson and the Lyle area. The far east Gorge will see light wind all day. By late morning, we’ll have inconsistent 21-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles, just fine for the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest Blowout. All downwind craft (including you) are welcome, not just kites.

Looking ahead to Sunday, the general picture is 22-26 from Viento to Mosier in the morning and Cascade Locks to The Dalles in the afternoon. Looking at the long-range forecast, things get a little tricky due to a building ridge of high pressure. Models indicate light wind on Monday, but this is one of those setups where I suspect the wind will beat the models. How about 12-15 Monday morning with a slow fade Monday afternoon?

Tuesday looks quite hot. As the heat low sits across the Cascades, we’re probably going to see a light wind day. Models currently indicate the heat low will shift east on Wednesday afternoon, giving us a light westerly start and 15-18 in the afternoon. Predicting the end of this heat wave this far in advance is tricky. That said, the long-range models indicate some cooling on Thursday, for west wind at 26-30.

Jones, Sauvie’s, Coast Beta Test Forecast

Jones Friday: 21-24. Saturday: 20-23. Sunday: 14-17. Sauvie’s Friday-Sunday: 12-15. Coast (north/central/south). Friday: 15-20/15-20/30+, W swell 3′ at 7 seconds. Saturday: 10-15/15-20/30+, W 2′ @ 8. Sunday: 15-20/20-25/30+, W 3′ @ 8.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s Friday morning as I write this, and I’m both filled with joy and a bit nervous about my meditation retreat that starts today. I’m thrilled to be taking a break from everything for the better part of 6 days. I feel a little guilty that I won’t be able to forecast. I also have this (incorrect) conception that I’ll be bored or anxious or otherwise uncomfortable because I’ll be doing “nothing”.

I have a couple of points to make about us as human beings based on my current feelings. First, we create a pre-story about upcoming events. By “pre-story”, I mean that we influence how we experience events, and even how they turn out, by layering our expectations over the future rather than letting the future unfold. This can lead us to miss out on opportunities and awesome experiences, because we’re not open enough to see what’s really happening.

Next, emotions are complex. I remember a session with a client where this person was talking about an experience and listed six or eight emotions related to that one experience. This is totally normal, and a sign of emotional intelligence. We often want experiences to be simple, but they’re often complex and confusing and difficult to sort through.

We can be joyful and nervous and excited and weary and… all at once. Recognizing this and sitting with it, all of it, helps build more capacity to experience the deepest nuances of life. Living in the complexity of our feelings makes life more vibrant and interesting. Having gone from one end of this experiential spectrum to the other, I assure you that more capacity for emotional experiencing makes for a richer life. So, let yourself feel your emotions, even when they don’t make sense. If they feel overwhelming, seek out one of us therapist people to help you sort it out. We like talking about emotions with you, and we like listening to you. That’s why we do this work. =)

Have a wonderful week of wind and heat, and I will see y’all next Thursday.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

Still nothing new to report here. Oh wait, there is! Chenoweth Bridge in The Dalles will be closed for replacement from 8/1 to 8/30. That’s the bridge just west of the gas station at the west end of town. If you want to ride Sevenmile Loop, it is still possible by taking the waterfront path via the Discovery Center. Also closed for the next several months is Odell Creek Bridge at the west end of Dethman Ridge Road.

Upcoming Events

There are a couple of highlights in events today: the movie Mulan plays at Cascade Locks Marine Park at dusk, and the Delta Aquarids meteor shower will be in the lower southern sky after midnight tonight and tomorrow. The Hood River County Fair continues today. On the water, Cascade Locks has the Columbia Gorge One-Design Regatta and the Laser Gorge Blowout, where little boats meant for light wind sail from Cascade Locks to Hood River in strong wind.

The Bridge of the Gods Kitefest Blowout for all downwind craft, not just kites, has been rescheduled for tomorrow – they’ll go from Stevenson to Hood River. There’s a Gorge Cup windsurfing race at Hood River’s Event Site tomorrow, the Dare to Live music fest at the Hood River Marina, and the movie The Sandlot at Sorosis Park at dusk. The Sandy Ridge Super D race is Sunday.

There’s also a trail run in Post Canyon at 8am tomorrow, a work party on the 180 Trail (meet at Binn’s Hill Staging Area at 9), a women’s shop ride from Mountain View Cycles at 9.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
