Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow morning starts off quite stormy as a cold front hits. As I suspected, the predicted precip amounts have come way down over the last 36 hours… anyway, the snow level will be around 4000′ early, dropping to 2000′ in the afternoon. We’ll see .4-.5” water value (WV) between 4am and 10am, for 4-5” of new snow at 5000′. The snow will taper off after that, alternating between sunny periods and periods of cloudy snowfall for up to 1” of accumulation. The wind tomorrow will be W 45-50 early, dropping to WNW 35 mid-morning and backing off over the rest of the day.

Thursday starts out clear and sunny and becomes cloudy by midday. We’ll see some R**N move in overnight. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 2000′ early, rising to 4500′ in the afternoon and 6500′ overnight as the next weather system hits. As of right now, it looks like we’ll see .3-.5” WV of rain between 10pm Thursday and 4am Friday. Wind on Thursday will be W 10 early, SW 20 midday and W 30 overnight.

Looking ahead to the Friday through Sunday period: NOAA is talking about an atmospheric river (aka Pineapple Express) impacting the PNW. As of right now, luckily, the river looks like it’ll strike from mid-WA north to BC, leaving us in the showery zone. This is good, because the snow level associated with the river appears to be around 8000′. Much could change between now and the weekend, but models are in good agreement in sending the bulk of the rain to the north.

Gorge Wind Forecast

In typical fall fashion, the gradient isn’t manifesting as wind early in the morning; we had .06 from Portland to The Dalles early this morning. You can expect westerlies at 5-10 through the whole Gorge early. As a cold front approaches the PNW this afternoon, we’ll see the wind pick up. 19-22 by noon from Stevenson to Mosier seems reasonable, followed by 23-26 near Rowena this afternoon. Arlington and Rufus look like 15-18 this afternoon, possible a little bit stronger at Rufus (but gusty).

The frontal system will move through tomorrow morning and high pressure will build in behind it. That’s a good setup for wind, but you’re going to want to get on it early; high pressure will build inland by the afternoon, leaving us with dropping windspeeds. Expect gusty westerlies at 26-30 by mid-morning from Stevenson to The Dalles, picking up to 26-30 out east a little bit later. The strongest wind tomorrow will be 10am to 2pm, so I’m going to recommend you drive pre-emptively if you want to catch it. Also, the predicted high in Hood River tomorrow is 50 degrees, so prepare for a chilly day on the water.

Thursday looks like light and variable wind. Friday through Sunday should have windy periods – difficult to predict – as a series of strong low pressure systems impact WA and BC.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s interesting to me to see the impact of grad school on this section of the forecast. Counseling grad school is like 24/7 therapy – they encourage us to develop our self-awareness and understanding of why we do the things we do. Once started, that process snowballs: the more self-awareness we develop, the more we’re aware and curious about what’s really happening in our minds. That takes a lot of processing power, and detracts from other things, like reflection.

I suspect this is the case no matter what’s occupying our minds. It could be work troubles, it could be illness, it could be relationship difficulties… the list of things that might take up our mental processing power goes on and on. There are a couple of powerful things we can do to impact the sense of overwhelm. The first is to not add to it: instead of ruminating over the troubling event, just let it be. Avoid speculating about possible negative outcomes. Instead, focus on what you can control about it and take steps to make those things happen.

Second, cut yourself some slack. When something big is happening in your world, you’re not going to be your usual self. You’ll be grumpier, you’ll be less focused, you’ll be more tired, and you’ll make more mistakes. You’re totally okay being those things – really, truly. It’s okay to not be your best self when there’s a lot going on in your universe.

So, cut yourself some slack. Don’t create more pain for yourself by speculating, worrying, and obsessing. Try to find some awesome within the unpleasantness. You’re awesome. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mostly clear out there this morning, and the sunshine should stick around all day today with clouds and sprinkles moving in tonight. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 50’s this afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow starts out cloudy and rainy with temps in the low 40’s. By the afternoon, we’ll see partly cloudy sky and sprinkles with temps in the low 50’s. Strong wind. 98% chance of rainbows. Expect either sunshine or Nothing to start the day on Thursday. Clouds move in during the day, and showers arrive late in the evening. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the low 50’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 28% chance of rainbows.

The weather system that’s moving in Thursday is the south edge of an Atmospheric River, aka Pineapple Express. NOAA’s AFD this morning was making a big deal out of the potential rainfall this weekend. In looking at the models, the GFS and Euro are both sending the bulk of the moisture to the north of us. As of right now, it’s looking cloudy and showery, but not torrential, for the weekend. That, of course, could change, but enough change to leave us under the pineapples seems unlikely given the agreement currently present between those models.

Road and Mountain Biking

I took a couple of laps on the Kleeway yesterday morning (I’m the Dirt Inspector!). The lowest section of Post was a little muddy, but Seven Streams was good, and the Kleeway was excellent. There’s some good dirt out there right now, and I’m going to suggest you get yourself some today before the rain hits it tomorrow morning. Syncline will be a little bit windy this afternoon, and you can forget about it for tomorrow. Way too windy! In road biking news, this morning looks good: clear sky and light wind. Tomorrow looks super windy. Thursday looks good: light wind all day and no rain until after dark.

Upcoming Events

Coming up this evening, there’s meditation at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30. A very senior American monk will be visiting. His name is Ajahn Geoff, and he’s pretty darn cool. I highly recommend you come check it out! If you’d like more meditation, there’s a half-day retreat at Yoga Samadhi on Saturday, 1-5pm. Also on Saturday, the HRATS have a trail work party in Post Canyon.

Also this evening: pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Marina, free Zumba at the Mt. Hood Community Center (6:30) and free yoga at the Mosier Senior Center (7pm). For Veteran’s Day, there’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30 and Aikido at Trinity Natural Medicine in Hood River at 6pm.

Have an awesome day today!
