Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Good morning skiers, riders and freeheelers! It’s quite the morning up on Mt. Hood. 17-19” of new snow has fallen in the last 24 hours. Judging by the temps, it’s probably on the heavy side, which is great for base building. Temps should be dropping today, and the snow should turn fluffier. We’ll see continued snowfall for the extended forecast. Our best chance for a big dumping is Friday night, but that’s dependent on where a narrow bad of moisture chooses to set up. Maybe not snow. Maybe over a foot! Meadows is open. T-Line is open. Teacup is really trying to keep up with all this snow. Skibowl hadn’t said anything about opening as of the time of this forecast. Meadows Nordic opens tomorrow.

Wednesday continues to add to the base as a cold front swings through. If you’re driving to the mountain, be aware that it snowed all night in the Gorge. Choose your route wisely. The snow level today starts at 4500′ near Mt. Hood, falls to 1000′ by late morning, and drops to 0′ overnight. About 0.4” to 0.5” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day, for 4-6” dry powder on top of last night’s denser snow. Overnight, another 0.1” WE falls and gives us another inch of snow. Wind: SW 40-60 early, WSW 35-45 around sunrise, W 25 mid-morning, S 10-20 in the afternoon, and SW 30-50 overnight.

Thursday will have flurries and sunbreaks during the day, partly cloudy sky in the evening, and clear sky overnight. The snow level near Mt. Hood will be 0-500′. About 0.3” WE is forecast during the day, for 3-4” powder. A trace might fall overnight. Wind: SW 30-50 early, W 20-25 for the rest of the day, and WSW 15-20 overnight.

Friday starts clear above 6000′, turns cloudy midday, and might or might not dump snow overnight. That’s the system referenced in the first paragraph – it could set up over Mt. Hood, and it could miss Mt. Hood. Models call for a trace to over a foot of new snow. Wind Friday: WSW 15-20 in the morning, SW 15-25 in the afternoon, and building SW wind overnight. Additional snow might or might not fall on Saturday. Sunday looks dry and sunny and cool. That’s it for now. Have a great powder day!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Meet at 5:15pm Mondays in November at the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road. Suggested donation up to $20. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

Now it’s snowy on the trails! We’ll keep the freeze/thaw language just in case the snow goes somewhere (which it won’t any time soon). If you ride trails that froze and then thawed, you’ll do major and probably permanent damage to the tread. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
