Gorge Wind Forecast

Predicting the wind for the next few days is quite a tricky matter. Offshore low pressure limits gradients and drives afternoon thunderstorm chances. Resulting wind will be gusty and difficult to predict. With those caveats in place, let’s take a look at Wednesday.

Not much happens to start Wednesday: early gradients of .05 and .01 suggest what wind there is will be confined to the western Gorge. For the first half of the day, we’ll have 5-10mph, perhaps 10-13 midday. As a shortwave moves through this afternoon, atmospheric instability increases. So does the wind. It’s hard to predict what we’ll get – models say anything from 18-22 to 25-29 from Stevenson to The Dalles. I think we’ll see a short period of mid-20’s before thunderstorms make the wind completely unpredictable. River flow is 146kcfs and temp is 63 degrees.

Offshore low pressure continues to negatively impact wind speed and quality on Thursday. Morning westerlies will be 5-10 in the west and 14-18 east of The Dalles. Afternoon thundershowers could be an issue again on Thursday, but the chances are lesser than on Wednesday. Best-case scenario gives us 7-10 in the western Gorge with 15-18 from Mosier to Arlington on Thursday afternoon.

Low pressure starts to move inland on Friday. That increases the chances of showers and knocks down the gradients. Morning westerlies will be 5-8 in the western Gorge and 10-13 east of The Dalles. The latest model run suggests afternoon wind of 11-14 from Stevenson all the way to Arlington. Models aren’t quite agreeing on the weather for the weekend, so we’ll wait and see what they say tomorrow before making predictions. The forecast is better than no wind, but lesser than nuking.
