Wednesday. Sun, wind and thunder.

DSC_7696
Thanks for understanding about the lack of a Tuesday forecast for the next few weeks. There was definitely no time between my Monday night class and my Tuesday morning class to make a forecast happen. Today (Wednesday) is starting out sunny with light wind on the river and gradients of .05 (pdx-dls) and .02 (dls-psc). River flow is 142kcfs at The Dalles and river temp is 68 degrees. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

A low pressure system off the coast this morning will keep the gradients from increasing much today, although an increasing thermal gradient will give us a bit of an afternoon bump. So, expect 10-13 this morning from Swell to Doug’s, filling in at Stevenson midday in the 10-13 range. Sometime in the afternoon, we’ll probably see a bump to 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier as the eastern half of the PNW climbs into the 90’s.

Tomorrow looks more interesting as an upper level low shifts east and high pressure builds in the Pacific. There is a chance the ULL will kick of thunderstorms, or at least destabilize the atmosphere, especially east of the Cascades in the afternoon. If that happens, this forecast is not valid. That said, here’s the forecast for Thursday: west wind at 10-13 for Dawn Patrol quickly rises to 17-21 by 11am and then 28-32+ by mid-afternoon on through sunset. The wind will start in the western Gorge and spread all the way east to Arlington in the afternoon. With the models predicting strong wind everywhere, you’ll get to choose your favorite beach tomorrow.

Friday starts off with 23-26+ east of the clouds, wherever that happens to be. We’re probably looking at Dawn Patrol from Mosier to Arlington, but it’s possible Swell could be in the mix too. By the afternoon, things should have settled down to a comfortable 25-29+ from Hood River (maybe Stevenson too, or maybe it’ll be in the low 20’s and cloudy) to Rufus with Arlington in the 23-26 range.

Looking ahead to the weekend, which is really too far away to be making forecasts, models suggest 17-20 or 21-24 and sunshine both days.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m thinking this morning about the difficulties of accessing mental health services in this country and the shame associated with seeking mental health assistance. We’ve split humans into two parts: body and mind. It’s okay to seek assistance if your body breaks down in some way, but for some reason, we’ve made it shameful to seek assistance if your mind is experiencing an unwell period.

The distinction between body and mind, by the way, is a creation of western culture. The two are indistinct – neurons connected to your brain run throughout your body, and your emotions live below your neck as much as they live within your cranial cavity.

Just as we need antibiotics sometimes, we need to be heard and limbically held (that’s what’s really happening in therapy along with skills and homework). In other words, we need someone’s full, complete, total, uninterrupted attention. (Just out of curiosity, what was your reaction to that last sentence? Shame, relief, anger?) It feels damned good to relax into an emotional space that’s all about you, and that’s not something that happens often in the real world, unless you set that intention ahead of time with your conversation partner. And even then… the focus often shifts.

Maybe we can remove the shame around emotional pain (aka “mental health issues”) by talking about it. Maybe we can remove the shame by occasionally giving each other what we’d get in therapy: a few minutes of totally undivided attention. Maybe we can remove the shame by really understanding that the mind and body are intertwined, and that an illness of one is as valid and worth treating as an illness of the other.

Be good to each other, and give people your complete attention when you’re listening. You may not be a therapist (or maybe you are!), but you can give someone a taste of that healing emotional energy. Listen well and completely, setting aside your concerns for just a few minutes. That’s an awesome gift to give someone. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

The best news today is that it’s a beautiful morning for a road ride: light wind and sunshine. It should stay a lot like this all day long. The next two days look windier, so get it now if you can!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5pm and the women’s post n’ pinot – that’s an all levels mountain bike ride – at Dirty Fingers at 5:30. Tomorrow’ night’s the race-pace Post n’ Pint ride at 5:30. Both of those rides will earn you a free pint of beer when you get back to the shop.

Tomorrow’s community sailing night in Cascade Locks with free sailboat rides. There’s also free yoga at Samadhi tomorrow night at 6, tai chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen and Zumba at Parkdale’s community center at 6:30

On Saturday, there’s a trail work party and campout at Falls Creek, windsurfing races in Hood River, and the movie Inside Out at Jackson Park on Saturday evening. Big Winds is having a parking lot SUP sale this weekend. Time and day are unknown yet, but parking lot sales mean bargains, and who doesn’t love a bargain. Hopefully they’ll BBQ too, because grad students like me appreciate BBQ more than bargains.

Have an awesome day today!
