Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

We’re still on track for an impressive fall mix of weather that will leave your head spinning. Snow Wednesday gives way to dry weather most of Thursday, then a torrential downpour Friday followed by significant snow accumulation through Sunday.

Timberline picked up 4” of new snow in the last day for 8” in the last couple of days. We’ll see a few more inches today which will make the mountain look stunning for the short period of clear weather on Thursday. For Wednesday, the snow level will be 2500-3000′ all day with the free air freezing level falling to 0-1000′ tonight. About 0.3” water equivalent is forecast today for 3” new snow. Wind: W 20 this morning and NW 10-15 from mid-afternoon on through the night.

Thursday starts sunny and chilly on the mountain, turns high overcast midday, and then becomes drizzly and super windy overnight. The free air freezing level will be 0-1000′ early and 2500′ in the afternoon. When the precip hits, temps will be 0C up to 8000′ for a period of mixed precip followed by steady and steadily increasing drizzle. About 0.3” rain is forecast overnight, but given the wind speed, we can probably go with 0.3”-0.6” rain. Wind: NW 10-15 in the morning, WSW 15-20 in the afternoon, W 40 in the evening building to W 60 overnight. Wow.

Torrential rain is forecast on Friday as a moderate to strong westerly atmospheric river slams into Mt. Hood with very strong upper-level wind and 5000′ winds up to 70 knots. The snow level will be 7500′ in the morning, 11,000′ in the afternoon, 9000′ around midnight, and 4500′ just before dawn on Saturday. As of this morning, the forecast calls for 2.5” rain during the day Friday followed by 3.6” rain overnight. Given the wind, even MORE rain is possible! Wind: W 60 in the morning, W 70 in the afternoon, and NW 45-50+ after midnight. If the resorts were open, they’d be shut down. Note: driving the passes Friday daytime into early Saturday is just a bad idea. Skip it if you can.

Saturday will be snowy and blustery. The snow level starts around 4500′, rapidly falls to 3000′ by daybreak, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ by Sunday morning. About 0.5-0.6” WE is forecast during the day for 5-7” new snow. Another 0.5” is forecast overnight for 5-6” more. Wind: NW 45-50 early, WNW 35-45 most of the day, W 40 in the evening, and SW 15-25 overnight. Another half a foot of snow is forecast on Sunday. Cool weather with snow showers continues through at least the mid to latter part of next week. Definitely a wild ride!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light westerlies Wednesday give way to light and variable wind on Thursday, quite the rainstorm on Friday, and better chances of usable wind on Saturday. Westerlies Wednesday morning are in the 11-14 range west of Mosier and 7-10 to the east. We might see 11-14 for a few hours this afternoon east of The Dalles. The western Gorge drops below 10mph. River flow readings are 66-127kcfs, river temp is 59F, and high temp forecast is 48F.

Thursday will be light and variable all day. High temp: 48F. A very powerful atmospheric river slams into the region on Friday. Upper-level winds will be extremely strong and may drop down to the surface at times. This doesn’t make for an accurate wind forecast. West of Hood River, you’ll find very gusty 20-30mph and a torrential downpour that increases as the day goes on. It does look like the eastern Gorge could see downslope wind potential for very gusty 20-40 for much of the day. East of The Dalles, the rain will be minimal for much of the day. High temp: 56F.

Better wind (and cooler temps) are in the the forecast for Saturday: 17-20 western Gorge and 24-28 from Lyle or Avery east to Threemile. Sunday: widespread easterlies.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! There’s a work party at Teacup this morning. The Gorge Gear Swap is Saturday 8 (early bird) or 9-2 at the Alliance Church in Hood River. Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!

Cycling

So much for the brown pow… trails will turn slick again today and stay that way for a while. The Family Man closure kicks off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
