Gorge Wind Forecast
Westerlies stick around through at least Sunday, and then we head into a hot spell, potentially 100+, where the westerlies will be questionable for a bit. Let’s look at Wednesday. It’s clear and sunny all across the land this morning, all the way from west of the metro area to out in the desert. Weak, but building, high pressure out in the Pacific combines with the desert heat low for thermals today. Early gradients were 0.07 (pdx-dls) and 0.01 (dls-psc), and westerlies were in the teens from Viento to Swell. Elsewhere: light. By mid-morning, we’ll have 11-14 from Stevenson to Swell with light westerlies to The Dalles and calm wind out east. From mid-afternoon on through the evening, westerlies pick up to 17-20 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 12-15 at Rufus and light wind east of there. River flow readings are 175-208kcfs, river temp is 66F, and high temp forecast is 95F. Hot! But not as hot as next week…
A weak offshore disturbance is forecast to move closer during the day on Thursday and move onshore in the evening or overnight. This will make the wind a bit gusty and unreliable. The day starts with 18-22 from Viento to Mosier with 11-14 at Stevenson and from Mosier to Arlington. Mid-morning westerlies rise to 23-26 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 16-19 at Rufus and 7-10 at Arlington. It’s likely areas west of Hood River (Swell, etc) will fall to gusty 18-23 in the afternoon. Between the Event Site and Rufus, you’re likely to find gusty 25-28. Arlington: 20-23. High temp: 88F.
Friday starts with deeper marine clouds and a healthy dawn patrol: 25-28 between Viento and Mosier with 18-22 east of Mosier to Arlington and 15-18 or less at Stevenson. The wind will build to 27-31 late morning from Viento to The Dalles (22-25 Stevenson) with 10-13 out east (according to the models… Rufus will probably beat the model). Afternoon westerlies, aided by a thermal gradient, hold at 24-27 from Hood River to Avery with gusty 19-23 from Stevenson to Swell and at Rufus. High temp: 81F.
Current forecast for Saturday is 26-29. Sunday: 21-24. Come to the Gorge for the weekend! Temps really start to climb on Monday, and the wind fades. Will it go totally calm? Maybe not… afternoon thermals may be possible if the forecast holds and keeps the desert super-duper-extra hot. Have a great week!

Local-ish Events
Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! It’s a busy week for sailboat racing in Cascade Locks: the Optimist Nationals are happening. The Gorge Paddle Challenge runs Friday through Sunday in Hood River.
Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.
Cycling
Falls Creek is open. All the 44 Road trails are open with a couple of caveats: Lookout Mountain is clear. Fifteen Mile has lots of trees down. Plains of Abraham is open and is rideable. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
