Tuesday. Wind. Fun stuff to do tonight and tomorrow. And maybe a colorful sunset tonight.

Random Morning Thoughts

I know you all have been waiting with bated breath for the update on my powdery mildew situation on my squash plants in my garden. I sprayed them with a 10% solution of milk a couple days back, and am happy to report that, so far, the mildew has not been spreading. The plants don’t look all that happy, but at least there are no more mildewy leaves. So, cross your fingers for my squash plants, please. In other garden news, the tomatoes are going crazy right now, and the peppers are starting to ripen. My latest attempt to grow carrots failed, as they were mowed down by some bug as soon as they germinated. So, I guess I’ll just plant more beets. The pole beans took a break from production in the last heat wave, but they’re flowering again now, so soon I’ll be in Romano Bean heaven again. That is all for now.

Do you find this forecast useful? Hooray!
It’s pledge drive month!

Thanks for coming here for your forecast. It’s time for the annual pledge drive! “WHAT?”, you say, “I thought this was free!” It is, but it takes lots of time. It’s my job, and you’re my employers! Here’s the deal: Every day someone has to pledge. If not, no website forecast the next day: only the people on the email list get their forecast. Want on that list? Make a donation. Do I save you gas? Find you more fun? Entertain you? The email list is not $99/year. Not $50/year. No, just $12.34 or more gets you on the list for the next year. Anything over the minimum feeds my coffee and bicycle addictions and makes me feel loved, and god knows we all need to feel loved. Do it via PayPal/CC by clicking on my photo. And thank you so much for your support. Don’t PayPal? You can send a check to PO Box 841 in Hood River. Thank you for your support. It means the world to me.

Gorge Wind

bikebanner
The air is not quite as still as it was yesterday morning, and the gradient is much bigger: At 6am, we had .09 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc). That’s enough for a quick ump to 19-23 this morning from Hood River to Mosier, filling in at Stevenson by late morning and Doug’s and Rufus by early afternoon. By early afternoon, we should see the wind rise to 23-26 from Stevenson to Rufus with Arlington joining the fun near sunset. The reason the wind will reach so far east today is due to a weak weather disturbance. That disturbance could cause the wind to be up-and-down, lighter than predicted, and just plain very-gusty from, oh, Home Valley to Doug’s starting late morning. Keep that in mind as you make your plans today.

Looks like we’ll start off with less gradient tomorrow, giving us 8-13 to start. The wind will rise to 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier by midday, hold there for a while, and rise to 21-24 from Stevenson to Doug’s late in the day.

Thursday looks like 13-16 early and 17-21 in the afternoon. This general weather pattern persists through the weekend: low off BC, weak high off OR coast, inland high pressure. Not a Classic setup, but a setup that’s likely to produce continuing light to moderate west wind of some sort, which is a very good thing considering it’s supposed to stay hot!

Out on the coast, you can expect the following (north/central/south). Today: 15-20/20/25, W 3’@7. Tomorrow: 20/25/25-30, W3@14. Thursday: 20/20-25/30, W 4@16 (yummy).

Gorge Weather

We’re starting off with a cool and sunny morning here in the Gorge. Temps will climb to the low 90’s today with a touch of mugginess and a slight chance of clouds and a few thunderstorms over the Cascades later today. That gives us a 63% chance of a colorful sunset. That colorful possibility continues tomorrow morning at sunrise. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and upper 80’s in the afternoon. Thursday looks much like Wednesday.

Road and Mountain Biking

If you’re riding today, get out and do it early, because it’s going to be rather hot and a touch on the humid side. And if you’re road biking, do that early, because the wind is going to get stronger as the day goes on.

River Levels / Cheezburger update

The White Salmon is at 2.25′. Cheezburger got eaten by Husum Falls the day before yesterday, but he’s fine, thanks for asking. Call that a hazard of being a guide on the White Salmon! The John Day dam is putting out 151-208kcfs and The Dalles dam is reading 176kcfs. Columbia river temp is 68.9 degrees at The Dalles Dam.

Events – email me if I’ve missed any outdoor-related events

If you’re looking for something fun to do tonight, there’s outdoor music at the Ruins at Springhouse. It’s free and all ages if you get there before 7pm and $3 and 21+ if you get there later. Also tonight, there’s pickup rugby at 5:30 at the Hood River Marina and there’s triathlon practice at 6:15 at Rowena’s Mayer Park. If you’ve never done an open-water swim, show up at 6 for some free coaching.

There’s all sorts of stuff happening tomorrow night. Families at Family Man has kid-friendly mountain biking at 5:30. There’s the women’s Post n’ Pinot mountain bike ride at Dirty Fingers at 5:30 (free pint of beer or glass of wine if you complete the ride). Sailboat races happen at the Hood River Marina around 6pm. There’s a track workout in Stevenson at 6pm, free Tai Chi at Wilson Park at 5:30, and ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 6:30.

The Bridge of the Gods Kite Fest blowout last weekend was postponed due to lack of wind. They’re planning on running it on Saturday with Sunday as the alternate day.

Then on Saturday night, CGWA and CGKA team up for a windsports slideshow at the Hood River Hostel at 7pm. If you’ve seen Grant, the guy with the blue flags, out shooting photos, you might be in this slideshow, so make plans to be there!

Have an awesome day today!
