Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The forecast continues to call for quite the wild ride over the next week. The mountain will pick up a little snow early in the week, a deluge of rain Friday into Saturday, and then (probably) heavy snow over the weekend.

Let’s dive right in on Tuesday. About 3” new snow fell at 5000′ over the last 24 hours, and a bit more will fall today. The snow level will be around 3000′ all day and will fall to 2000′ after midnight. A trace is forecast during the day. About 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast from the evening on through Wednesday morning for 2-3” new. Wind: Light and variable this morning, W 10 this afternoon, and WSW 20-30 overnight.

Light snow continues on Wednesday as the snow level falls from 2000′ to 1500′ or so. About 0.1” WE is forecast daytime, for an inch of new. A trace falls in the evening before the sky clears. Wind: WSW 20-30 early, W 15-20 in the afternoon, and N 5 overnight.

Thursday will be clear in the morning and high overcast in the afternoon. The next system arrives in the evening. It may start as wet snow or even a bit of freezing rain, but it will quickly transition to all rain, all the time. About 0.2” rain is forecast overnight, but that could easily double or triple given the wind forecast: N 5 in the morning, SW 15 in the afternoon, WSW 30-40 in the evening, and W 60 overnight.

Nuking wind, up to 70 knots out of the W, is forecast Friday along with up to 6” of rain. Yes, you read that right! The snow level will fall from 10,000′ in the midst of this to 5500′ around midnight and 3500′ after midnight. Up to half a foot of snow is forecast Saturday daytime followed by a foot Saturday night. Fingers crossed that this holds. After that – several days of cold-enough weather with a lack of model clarity about the details. It’s worth mentioning that driving weather Friday into Saturday will be awful. If you can avoid the passes, do so!

Hood River Weather Forecast

Clouds this morning may break up some this afternoon, but any sun will add convective showers and hail. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and near 50 later. Light and variable wind. 38% chance of rainbows. Wednesday will be sprinkly. Temps start in the upper 30’s and rise to the upper 40’s. Light to moderate westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Thursday starts with a hard frost under clear sky and then turns high overcast. Rain starts in the evening. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and upper 04’s later. Light and variable wind. No rainbows.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! So much for the brown pow… trails will turn are slick and will stay that way for a while. Next up: our first freeze-thaw warning of the year for Thursday morning. The Family Man closure kicks off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
