Gorge Wind Forecast

That little cold front that was supposed to move through early this morning has been delayed. In addition, the models that were predicting an atmospheric cap yesterday are predicting atmospheric mixing for much of the day today (probably due to the delayed frontal passage). So, that’s knocked our early morning wind down from earlier predictions.

We’ll see the wind hang out in the 16-19 range this morning from Stevenson out to Arlington. As the weather system moves eastward by early afternoon and a heat low moves into the desert, the wind should pick up. Let’s go with 26-30 from Viento to Arlington by 2pm, lasting late into the evening, but possibly not ’til dark, considering that today is the longest day of the year. River flow is 302kcfs, strong but totally doable for Rufus, and river temp jumped to 61 degrees in the last couple of days.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.

Wednesday starts off with marine clouds in Portland, sunshine in the eastern Gorge, and strong high pressure offshore. Hot weather in the desert will combine with relatively cooler air to the west to enhance the pressure gradient. Models suggest 16-19 from Viento to Hood River to start the day with 22-25 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Rufus. I would not be surprised to see stronger wind than the models are predicting, given the overall setup.

The predicted high temps for Thursday have backed off from earlier model runs. We’re now looking at 80 or so. This has bumped up the wind forecast just a bit: 13-16 all day long from Viento to Hood River in the morning and Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are all currently forecast to have light east wind, with Saturday bringing the possibility of widespread 10mph east wind. The next chance for a big west wind day is next Monday, but that’s a long, long ways out to be making a prediction.

Random Morning Thoughts

Today is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Or at least the day with the most daylight – the actual length of the day doesn’t change at all! Today contains plenty of daylight at all hours of the clock for you to do that thing that you want to do today.

We have a struggle living in the Northwest – because of our long, dark winters, daylight and sunshine can come to feel precious. We can experience anxiety to make the most of each sunny day. Our bodies and nervous systems take weeks, months, to relax into the reality of summer. And then the sunshine is gone.

Today is a very long and very sunny day. Take some time today to relax into the arrival of the warm, sunny season. Let go of the scramble to use every last photon, and let a few minutes slip by. It’s an awesome day. Enjoy it. You’re awesome too.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

The dirt is pretty amazing top to bottom in Post. There’s a work party on the 180 trail on Saturday. Fifteenmile is confirmed open. Falls Creek is also reportedly open, but I don’t have confirmation of that one.

Upcoming Events

Today’s community events include a dance exercise class at 11 at the White Salmon Grange. White Salmon also has meditation today at 6:30, taught by the monks from Pacific Hermitage. There’s pickup touch rugby tonight at the Hood River Marina at 5:45.

Tomorrow night at 5:30, Dirty Fingers Biek Shop has the race-pace and women’s-only shop rides on the currently-perfect dirt of Post Canyon. Other trail updates today include the fact that Falls Creek, lower 450 on the 44 Road, and Fifteenmile Creek are now open. There’s a work party on the 180 trail in Post Canyon on Saturday. The World Naked Bike Ride is in Portland on Saturday, and should be perfect with 90 degree weather.

Saturday has two good bike rides: the Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour in Trout Lake, and a benefit bike ride for Kirsten (I don’t know her, but she seems to have a lot of friends who care deeply about her) at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 8am for the long ride and 11am for the shorter rides. Childcare is provided for the 11am rides, and people are asked to bring a potluck dish for the afterparty. This entire weekend is the CGWA Beach Bash at the Hood River Event Site, thankfully featuring lots of Standup Paddle Boards for the predicted light wind. Friday is Foil Fest.

Have an awesome day today!
