Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! Westerlies stick around through Sunday and take a break Monday and Tuesday. After that, model spread is high, but the ensembles generally indicate westerlies returning Wednesday and sticking around for a bit. Strongest days of the next week or so will be Saturday and next Wednesday. Lightest: Tuesday.
Friday started with light onshore gradients: 29.93/29.90/29.94 with light/variable wind all through the Gorge. A front approaches today and nudges the wind speeds up, and the cross-Cascade thermal gradient lends a hand. That said… elevated instability this afternoon could fire off wind-killing thunderstorms, and approaching fronts tend to make the wind gusty.
So… by late morning, we should see gusty 15-18mph from Stevenson to Hood River. Into the afternoon, we’ll have a slow build to gusty 19-22mph from Stevenson to Avery. For the Executive Session (after 5pm), we’re looking at gusty 21-4mph from Stevenson to Arlington. All this rests on the assumption that thunderstorms don’t materialize. If they do, you should ignore the wind and get off the river because lightning is bad for your health! River flow over the last 24 hours was 99-154kcfs, river temp is 72.3F (poor salmon!), and high temp forecast is 89 in Hood River and 100 in the desert.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
On Saturday, a cold front will progress from west to east. This leaves us with a massive temp gradient across the Cascades. It’s not quite The Cooldown You Were Looking For – we’re lacking offshore high pressure – but it’ll still be windy. Early westerlies will be 25-28mph from Stevenson to Hood River with 29-32mph from Mosier to Threemile. As the front swings through mid-morning, the wind is likely to drop and become erratic for a bit. After it clears the area, we’re left with 25-28mph (maybe a little more?) from Stevenson to Hood River with 30-33mph from Mosier to Threemile with 27-30mph at Boardman. Speeds fall off after 5pm. High temps: 79 in Hood River, 86 in The Dalles, and 95 in the desert.
Sunday brings deep low clouds to the west side and sunshine to the east. Models aren’t all that enthusiastic about the wind (17-20mph), but reality is likely to over-perform. Early wind will be 11-14mph from Stevenson to Doug’s with 18-22mph from Avery to Arlington. Afternoon: 20-23mph from Stevenson to Mosier with 14-17mph eat of Mosier to Arlington. With this particular setup, Rufus can over-perform, so we’ll revisit this in tomorrow’s forecast.
On to Monday… as of right now, ensembles are pretty insistent on easterlies at 15-20mph or so – head to Stevenson, Home Valley, and Viento for best results. Tuesday looks light/variable in the morning with the potential for moderate westerlies in the afternoon. With the arrival of another cold front on Wednesday, westerlies return. Deets are unclear. Ensembles hold on to west wind through at least next Saturday. That’s it for today. Get out there and have some fun, and get some for me! It’s still gonna be a while before I can get back out there!

Good morning, neighbors! It’s Friday, TGIF! Hot weather is on tap today with a chance of thunderstorms tonight, but cooler conditions are forecast for the weekend, yay! Temps bump up again Monday and Tuesday before dropping again Wednesday and holding in the cool-for-summer zone (probably) into next weekend. Areas west of Hood River might even pick up a little rain Sunday morning and during the day Wednesday. How awesome would that be?!?!
Looking around the Gorge this morning from my new perch (lying on the floor, thanks a lot, back injury), I see a low of 51 degrees in Glenwood. 61 this morning in Hood River with an AQI of 100ish means it’s a great morning for airing out the house. Surface-quality air should stay good today, but lots of smoke aloft will head this way with the arrival of southerly flow this afternoon. Also coming: humidity and heat: temps rise to 89 in Hood River, 97 in The Dalles, and 100 near Pasco. Starting around 2pm, instability increases and gives us a possibility of elevated thunderstorms. These storms tend to be more lightning-focused than rain focused. As much as I like thunderstorms, let’s hope they don’t happen! Wind today builds from “light” to west 20-25mph between Stevenson and Arlington.
Thunderstorm chances continue over the Cascades into Saturday morning with a little rain possible west of Hood River through sunrise. Low clouds fill in to Hood River early Saturday with a mix of mid and high clouds to the east. A “pretty sunrise warning” has been posted (by TATAS) for areas east of Underwood. Morning temps: 55-70. Afternoon: 79 in Hood River, 86 in The Dalles, and 95 in the desert. West wind will be 25-30mph all day between Stevenson and Hood River and 25-35mph between Mosier and Boardman. Fire danger: extreme – these westerlies won’t just be along the river – they’ll be up in the hills too. Be careful out there! Skip the mowing and weed whacking, secure your trailer chains, and don’t pitch cigarette butts.
Low clouds push all the way to Hood River or Mosier on Sunday morning. Temps at 850mb (5000′) drop to +10C, setting us up for a cool morning: 40ish in Glenwood and 50-60 elsewhere. Clouds burn off in the afternoon, and we’re left with highs from 79 to 87, hottest east of The Dalles, West wind will be 15-20mph in the morning from Stevenson to Arlington’s Triangle. Afternoon: 15-20mph eat of The Dalles and 20-25mph between Stevenson and Murdoch.
Monday looks sunny and warmer with east wind at 20mph in the usual east wind spots – west of Hood River. Tuesday also looks warm and sunny with light/variable wind in the morning and moderate westerlies in the afternoon. On Wednesday, an unseasonably strong cold front is possible. This could bring some light rain west of Hood River, and it will bring cooler temps and strong west wind. Beyond that: relatively cool into next weekend. Sounds like a pretty decent weather week, eh?
