Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! Greetings from the floor of my living room, still! I’ll be back out there with y’all one of these days. In the meantime, get some for me today – it’s going to be a solid one out there! Your Gorge wind forecast contains strong westerlies today followed by still-decent westerlies on Sunday. Monday brings a round of moderate easterlies. Tuesday may deliver late in the day, and Wednesday’s likely to serve up mid-20s or better. The Euro ensemble is pretty insistent that westerlies will continue into next weekend… (sorry about the not-great wind table above – my computer ate the good one and I need to redo it – spent 20 minutes looking for it this morning!)
But first, this weekend! It’s Saturday, and early pressures were 30.04/29.90/29.85 for gradients of 014/0.05. Offshore: an approaching trough/front combo. Metro area: partly cloudy. We’ll have westerlies at 25-28mph from Viento to the Hatch early. By mid to late morning, westerlies build to 25-28mph from Stevenson to Mosier. From Lyle to Arlington, we’ll see westerlies rise to 30-33mph by early afternoon. East of Arlington to Boardman: 27-30mph.
Westerlies hold in these ranges all day long, although the wind may be up-and-down and gusty due to the approaching front. Pre-frontal wind like this tends to be gusty at Rufus, but hey, maybe we’ll get lucky and have the “right” direction there today! River flow over the last 24 hours was 101-154kcfs (102-154kcfs at Rufus), river temp is 72.5F (poor salmon!), and high temp forecasts are 80F in Hood River and 90ish out in the desert.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
Post-frontal conditions on Sunday morning give us deep marine clouds on the west side and lingering westerlies: gusty 19-22mph from Viento to Mosier early with 18-21mph from Lyle to Rufus. It’ll probably take a bit of time for the clouds to burn off and the wind to settle in. By late morning or early afternoon, you’ll find 20-23mph from Mosier to Rufus. As the clouds burn off in the afternoon, westerlies fill in at 20-23mph from Stevenson to Rufus. After 5pm, all locations drop to 15-18mph. High temps: 78 in Hood River and 85 in Rufus.
East wind arrives on Monday. Max speed will be for a few hours mid-morning: 20-25mph at Stevenson, Home Valley, and Viento with 20mph at Iwash/Rooster Rock. Afternoon wind falls to 10-15mph. High temp: 87 degrees.
Not much happens Tuesday morning. We could see westerlies at 17-20mph late in the day between Stevenson and Mosier. A cold front is forecast for Wednesday – similar to today (Saturday). This sets us up, if we’re lucky, for 26-29mph or so, likely strongest from Stevenson to Rufus. Lingering seasonable weather is likely to drive west wind at 17-20mph or more into next weekend. Good morning, neighbors! It’s Saturday, and another day of extreme fire danger is on tap – many of us are under (yet another) Red Flag Warning today. Be careful out there! Cooler, less breezy weather arrives for Sunday followed by warmer, smokier weather on Monday as east wind blows through the Gorge. We’ll transition back to westerlies on Tuesday afternoon and finish off next week with west wind, clear air, and temps that hover slightly below normal, yay.
Looking at Saturday morning… it’s warm (65ish) in many places and warm (54F) in Glenwood. Wind Johnnies were all fired up at dawn when they saw westerlies at 25-30mph between Viento and Hood River. Thanks to a cold front today, we’ll have strong wind all day. Expect 25-30mph that eventually fills in all locations between Stevenson and Boardman including up in the hills and mountains. Please skip the mowing and weed whacking today, and make sure trailer chains are secured far from the road. Any sparks could start a fire in these conditions. Temps today max out around 80 in Hood River, 86 in The Dalles, and 95 in Pasco.
Lots of clouds push inland Saturday night into Sunday morning – those clouds could potentially make it all the way to Rowena! Temps at 850mb (~5000′) fall to +7C, which could drop Glenwood into the 30s and the Parkdale area into the low 40s. Rest of us: 50-60 degrees to start. We’ll see west wind at 20mph between Viento and Rufus in the morning and west wind at 20-25mph between Stevenson and Avery in the afternoon. Highs: 78 in Hood River, 84 in The Dalles, and 86 in Pasco, a nice break for folks way out there in the desert who are usually 90+ degrees. With those “chilly” temps, everyone will be out putting sweaters on the watermelons! And by watermelons, I don’t mean jugs, knockers, bazoombas, boobs, or boulders. Actual, honest-to-god watermelons get hypothermic when hight emps drop into the 80s. It’s important to protect them!
High pressure builds overhead on Monday and sets us up for hotter, drier, east-wind weather. Morning temps: 50-60 with 40ish in Glenwood. Afternoon: 87-92. Wind will be light easterly early. Midday: 15-20mph near Iwash (pen*s) Rock and Stevenson. The wind drops off in the afternoon. Even so, it’s likely to blow smoke into the Gorge from the fires to the east of us.
Smoke and heat (89-95 degrees) is our forecast Tuesday with calm wind early and west wind at 15-20mph late. It’ll take some time to shoo out the smoke, but Wednesday’s strong west wind should help. Beyond that: west wind of some sort and temps that hover slightly below normal through next weekend. Safe travels. -TATAS
