Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! I heard it was a good day out there today – I’m hoping you got some! I’m still broken, but at least I can swim laps now! Being in some water is better than no water at all! In service of giving my neck a break (I’m typing this lying on the floor), this forecast is for Sunday and Monday. I’ll be back again on Tuesday with a forecast of what’s likely to be an extended stretch of westerlies.
Sunday morning started with pressures of 30.10/30.03/29.98 for gradients of 0.07/0.05. Marine clouds extended past Hood River this morning. Thanks to the clouds, the eastern sites will be windy in the morning. When the clouds burn back midday, the wind will pull back to the western Gorge. Early wind was 20-23mph between Avery and Arlington with 12-15mph from Stevenson to Doug’s. Viento’s early offering was 20-23mph. The wind holds just like this for a few hours.
As the cloud burn back, we’ll see speeds drop east of The Dalles – those locations fall to 10-13mph this afternoon. Between Stevenson and Doug’s, westerlies rise to 19-22mph this afternoon. After 5pm, the wind falls to 14-17mph. River flow over the last 24 hours was 95-144kcfs, river temp is 72.0F (poor salmon), and high temp forecast is 78 in Hood River and 85 in the desert.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
High pressure builds over the PNW on Monday and turns the wind offshore. A heat low in the Willamette Valley helps out the easterlies. Morning wind will be 25mph at Iwash/Rooster Rock, Stevenson, Home Valley, and Viento. Get it early, as it will fade! By mid-afternoon, the wind falls to 15mph at Stevenson, 10-15mph at Iwash Rock, and rises to 10mph from Hood River east to The Dalles and beyond. High temp: 87F in Hood River.
Tuesday starts dead calm. Moving pieces offshore contribute to an onshore temp gradient in the afternoon. By late morning, we’ll have gusty 16-19mph from Stevenson to Mosier. Hold out til mid-afternoon, and you’ll find gusty 16-19mph from Stevenson to the Hatch with gusty 19-22mph from Hood River to Avery. High temp: 90 in Hood River.
A weather system of some sort is likely sometime on Wednesday. This sets us up for stronger westerlies. As of this morning, I’ll say 25-28mph, probably extending as far east as Rufus. Models hint at mid-20s continuing through at least Friday. For next weekend, about 80% of the ensemble members are calling for 17-20mph or more both days. Good morning, neighbors! If you’re west of The Dalles this morning, you’re in for a special treat: CLOUDS!!! They’ll burn off by afternoon, but until then… it’s a cozy morning in the western Gorge. Looking at the upcoming week, we have a spike in temps Monday and Tuesday followed by cooler, seasonable, breezy weather all the way through next weekend. Morning clouds become a regular thing west of Hood River by the end of the week. If we look way deep into the future… about 30% of the ensemble members hint at some rain for the first week of September, but that’s far from certain at this point.
It is Sunday morning. Despite the cold temps aloft, temps down low remained quite warm overnight. Even Glenwood started today at 57 degrees, and many other locations were in the mid 60s. Even so, it’ll be a relatively cool day for late August. Stevenson’s high: 76. Hood River: 78. The Dalles: 83. Pasco: chilly for them – only 86 degrees today. Once again, we’ll have west wind: 10-15mph west of The Dalles this morning with 20-25mph east of The Dalles to Arlington. Afternoon wind: 20-25mph between Stevenson and The Dalles with 10-15mph to the east.
The wind turns calm and then easterly overnight which allows smoke from the local fires to pool in the lowlands. Morning temps: 50-60 with clear sky. East wind builds to 20-25mph near Iwash (wiener) Rock, Home Valley, Stevenson, and Viento with 10mph east to Arlington. This dissipates the low-level smoke some and brings in haze from the east. High temps: 88 in Stevenson, 87 in Hood River, 93 in The Dalles, and 92 in Pasco.
Another smoky morning is in the cards Tuesday thanks to calm wind. Morning lows: 50-65. Afternoon highs: 88-97, hottest in The Dalles. West wind picks up to 15-25mph between Stevenson and Avery in the afternoon.
Cooler weather is forecast on Wednesday and beyond as a trough (cooler air) drops south from Canada. High temps from The Dalles westward are likely to stay under 90 degrees all the way through next weekend. Many days will have morning clouds west of Hood River, and every day is likely to have some measure of west wind. This should 1) make the Boardheads happy, 2) keep the air relatively smoke-free, and 3) keep fire season rolling – be careful out there folks. Safe travels. -TATAS
