Tuesday. More wind, less heat.

DSCF0601
Today’s the last day of the heat wave, and we’ll see stronger wind starting tomorrow. It doesn’t look like the nukefest we saw in the models five days ago, but it still looks like lots of wind. Today, too, shall be windy; Once again this morning, the Gorge is beating the crap out of the models with wind in the mid-teens from Viento (that’s a guess, but I bet it’s correct) to Hood River. Gradients support increasing wind today; We started off the day with a .11 (pdx-dls) .00 (dls-psc) and a whopping .50 (eph-pdt) and .55 (eph-dls). Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
Coast Wind Forecast (when I remember).

Models suggest we’ll see 21-24 this afternoon, and since they’ve been forecasting low, I’m going to go big and say we’ll see 23-26 by 2pm from Stevenson to Doug’s, filling in to Maryhill at 20-23 and Arlington at 13-16 after 5pm as a weak weather system approaches. That weak weather system may knock down the wind from Swell to The Dalles this afternoon, leaving us with that Stevenson/Avery thing happening. So, sail early just in case.

That weather system moves through tonight or tomorrow morning, and the timing will determine the wind strength and steadiness tomorrow morning. As of right now, it looks like we’ll see 18-22 for Dawn Patrol from Swell to Mosier, climbing steadily to 26-30 by the afternoon from Swell to Doug’s. Stevenson is going to depend on the low clouds; if we have ’em, Stevenson will be in the 10-13 range. If we don’t, it’ll be in the mid 20’s. Maryhill should get windy late in the day, and Arlington should have some wind late in the day as well.

See below for details.

Thursday starts off with 17-21 and picks up to 25-29 from Swell to Doug’s by the afternoon. Friday also looks to start at 17-21 and pick up. However, there’s a weather system on Friday that will do two things: it will enhance the gradients and it will make the wind gusty and unreliable in some locations. At this point, the weekend days look light and variable (LTV) in the morning and possibly windy, possibly not, in the afternoon.

Out on the coast, expect this (north/central/south)… Today: 20-25/25-30/30-35, W 3′ @ 10 seconds becoming S 2′ @ 17 seconds. Tomorrow: 15-20/20-25/30-40, S 2 @ 16. Thursday: 15-20/25-30/35-45, S @ @ 14. Pistol River looks nuking windy with a building NW swell for the duration of the Pistol River Wave Bash. Even Dale Cook might want something smaller than a 4.2.

Random Morning Thoughts

The repercussions of my accidental call for universal renewal continue… yesterday I was locked out of sending emails from my Gmail for a while because I’d sent too many. It appears this forecast service has outgrown my twomirrors account. So… you might see emails from a different address until I get this sorted out. To be honest, I was freaking out for a bit about what to do (it’s not about me – it’s about the thousands of people using the forecast – I feel responsible), but it’s really just a matter of taking a few hours and sorting things out, and then it will be, well, sorted out.

This is just a small thing, really, but it’s a good reminder: the troubles we have shall pass. We will get through them. Even if it feels horrible/stressful/sad/scary in the moment, if nothing else, our feelings and reactions to whatever is happening will change. And time will move forward; we won’t be stranded in the now with our difficulties forever.

Yes, it’s true that some things will not end. But our current reaction to those things will end. We’ll create more peace and acceptance, and even the hardest things will become less so in our perception. So, if you’re struggling with something tough, I offer you the knowledge that time will move forward and your inner pain will lessen. It doesn’t feel like it now, I know. But things will get better, and knowing that will hopefully give you some hope in the now. Relax into whatever is going on, and you’ll create less suffering for yourself.

And if you’re having an awesome day, I encourage you to bask in the awesomeness and enjoy it while it’s here. It’s windy. It’s going to be more windy later. Get your butts out on the water!

Gorge Weather Forecast

Yep, still not June. Still Aug-une out there. And it’s a big muggy, with the dewpoint at 56 degrees this morning. We’ll see another hot day, with temps climbing into the low 90’s under mostly clear sky. Moderate wind. No rainbows.

In case you were wondering, we did set a record high temp yesterday at HOXO (the HR airport): 95 degrees. We beat the old high by two degrees, making it two degrees harder for us to set a record in the future.

Tomorrow sees more sunshine, but tomorrow also sees the temps drop about 10 degrees, leaving us with upper 50’s in the morning and low 80’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows. Thursday and Friday look nearly identical to tomorrow.

Road and Mountain Biking

Yesterday afternoon was most definitely cycling, Bikram style. Today shall be the same, only windier. If you are planning ahead, plan to not ride Post Canyon the weekend of the 20th. Not only is it the Enduro, but it’s 12 Hours of Post, and there will be racers all over the trail system. In other cycling news, the 20th is also the Dirty Fingers Anniversary party, themed “Black Tie, Leather or Toga” this year. Start working on your costume.
