Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

West wind is forecast to stick around at least through Friday. Models hint at a lighter day on Saturday and more wind on Sunday, but the details for this weekend weather-wise are far from clear. Windiest day: Friday. Let’s stick with the next four days, when you’ll probably be spending time on the river with cleaner air than we’ve had recently. You may want to pack a slightly warmer wetsuit than you’ve been using…

Tuesday kicks off with pressures of 29.90/29.83/29.92 for .07 pdx-dls gradient. Westerlies are in the single digits to low teens all through the Gorge. By late morning, we should have 19-22 from Stevenson to Mosier with 11-14 near Lyle and Rowena with 7-10 near Rufus. Afternoon wind builds to 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles. It appears the wind will shift east a bit from mid-afternoon on as a trough moves inland and gives a lift to gradients; you’ll find 24-27 from Mosier to Doug’s with 19-22 at Rufus and gusty 16-19 from Stevenson to Hood River. River flow readings this morning are 68-136kcfs, river temp is 70F, and high temp forecast is 76F.

Wednesday’s opening gambit is 12-15 from Viento to Hood River with 5-10 in the eastern Gorge and at Stevenson. Midday: 19-22 from Stevenson to Hood River with 11-14 from Lyle to Doug’s. The executive session spreads that 19-22 wind all the way from Stevenson to Doug’s with 11-14 at Rufus. High temp will be in the mid 70’s.

Thursday sees weak offshore high pressure establish and join a heat low in southern Oregon and an approaching front for slightly stronger, but gustier westerlies. The day kicks off with 19-22 from Viento to Mosier with 7-10 at Stevenson and in the eastern Gorge. From midday on, you’ll find gusty 22-25 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 11-14 at Rufus in the afternoon. Stronger wind is forecast on Friday as cooler air flows into the west side and holds. For now, let’s call it 25-29 from Stevenson to Arlington. Stronger wind is not out of the question. High temp: mid 70’s.

Looking at the weekend, we still see a lot of uncertainty in the overall weather pattern. That makes it impossible to give an accurate wind forecast. The general consensus of the ensembles of the Euro is for mid teens on Saturday and low-mid 20’s on Sunday, but don’t plan around that yet. Let’s give it a couple more days to see if the forecast coalesces around a consensus. Enjoy your week!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

As of Monday, 8/17, the following trails are closed due to fire danger: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and andy lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
