Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There’s finally a lot of good news in the Mt. Hood snow forecast! Starting late Wednesday, we’re headed into a cool, wet period through the weekend, at least. The snowpack will grow, and you’ll finally get some powder turns! The snow level will be low enough over the weekend to improve XC skiing conditions too.

For Tuesday, we’ll see some light mixed precip on the moutain in the pre-dawn hours followed by partly cloudy conditions through Wednesday morning. The snow level will be 5500′ early, dropping to 3500′ by mid-morning. The mountain will pick up just .1” water value (WV) for a trace of new. Widn will be SW 15-20 all day.

Wednesday looks dry through 4pm, then rainy, then very snowy. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 9000′ when the precip starts, 5000′ around 10pm, and 4000′ after midnight. Total precip will be about 1.7” WV. 1/2” to 3/4” will fall as rain. That will be followed by 5-9” of new snow. Wind will be SW 15 early, rising to SW 30-40 in the afternoon and overnight.

Snowfall continues Thursday. The snow level will be 4000′ in the morning, slowly falling to 2000′ after midnight. The mountain will receive .6” WV during the day, for 5-7” of new snow. Another inch of new snow falls overnight. Wind will be SW 25 early and SW 15-20 in the afternoon and evening.

More snow falls on Friday. The snow level will be 2000′-2500′ all day. About .4” WV falls during the day, for 4-5” of new. Antoher .5” WV falls overnight, for 5-6” of new. With relatively light wind and cold temps, this should be high-quality snow. Wind will be SW 20-25 all day and night.

As of right now, it looks like we’ll see another foot of snow, at least, over the weekend. This will cause mayhem at the resorts. Remember that Meadows does have a free shuttle from the Hood River Event Site on Saturday and Sunday, should you (or your kids) prefer to ride a bus there and back.

Random Morning Thoughts

I receive a daily mindfulness-themed email. Yesterday’s contained a reminder to stay engaged with one’s mental state. This is something I’ve learned to do, because it leads to a happier life.

Because we are busy, we often don’t take the time to notice the beginnings of stress, frustration, sadness, anger, irritation, or other negative emotions. Or perhaps we do notice them, and we ignore them for various reasons.

Doing this is like letting the dishes, dirty laundry, or piles of stuff accumlate in our living space. When we stay on top of our mind, it is very much like staying on top of our housecleaning. (I, by the way, am much better at the former than the latter!).

Taking a few minutes to check in with the mind and address any messes is like taking a few minutes to pick up the dirty clothes from the floor. Mental housekeeping saves us from a bigger job down the road. Take a moment now to check in. Spend a few minutes journalling or addressing unfinished business. Then go about your day. May it be an awesome one!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Post Canyon is currently closed to all users to protect the trails from damage. Whoopdee is closed to bikes and horses for the same reason. Syncline remains mobbed. I’m not sure about the upper half of Nestor, but the Horse Camp section is in good shape with one tree down.

Upcoming Events

Coming up Tuesday, there’s by-donation moving meditation at Trinity at 6:15. There’s a free meditation/breathing class at Flow at 8am. There a free yoga class at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon. There are two evening by-donation events: a women’s only (anyone identifying as “female”) mobility, strength and self-defense class at First Light in Hood River at 6pm, and meditation with the Pacific Hermitage monks at 6:30 at Yoga Samadhi. The annual Dirty Fingers Chili Cookoff is Wednesday evening.
