Random Morning Thoughts
My friend Terry and I went down to the Event Site yesterday evening to drink a Rainier. Well, I drank about 5oz of Rainier before I got sick of drinking beer, probably because I don’t like drinking beer. Anyway, I forgot how nice it is to just hang out on the beach in the evening rather than hanging at home and working on the computer or reading a book on the couch. I’m going to head to the beach more often, maybe with a friend, or maybe with a book. Turn off the TV and the FB and join me?

Gorge Wind
People keep asking me for a coast forecast, so each morning I look at the coast forecast, and if it looks decent (like yesterday did), I write it down on my notepad. And then I forget to include it in the forecast. Perhaps I should just start doing a hindcast for the coast? Just FYI, it was windy with waves at the coast yesterday… Yeah, maybe not.
Anyway, today looks pretty light out there on the coast, except at Pistol, where it will be windy, so take your surfboard if you’re heading west to beat the heat (My friend Terry and I are planning on heading west as well, to Lloyd Center, where the air conditioning should have it right around 70 degrees and not-windy.)
Anyway, the Gorge forecast. Gradients are E .11 this morning, and it’s blowing in the teens at Stevenson and 30ish at Rooster. Expect Steven’s Locks to pick up to 24-27 and Rooster to hang at 26-30 through late morning or early afternoon, when the wind will fade.
By Wednesday morning, we’ll have Dawn Patrol firing in the Corridor, with 21-24 or more from the Hatchery to Mosier. The wind will quickly rise to 28-32+ from the Hatch to Hood River, and then fill in from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon.
Thursday brings a deeper marine push, which may shift Dawn Patrol to Mosier and the Lyle/Rowena stretch. Or maybe not. Anyway, expect Dawn Patrol somewhere at 25-29 on Thursday morning, with midday wind at 28-32+ from the Hatchery to Doug’s, filling in from Stevenson to Maryhill.
Friday looks like another round of 25-29 in the Hood River/Rowena sections of river.

Advertising Worth Reading – Stoked Roasters
For every adventurous soul, the magic moment varies. For us, that moment begins the second we drop our freshly roasted beans into the cooling tray… the stoke is born, ready to brew. Come taste the stoke in our tasting room here in Hood River, OR at the waterfront. Don’t live here? no problem! You can order online! If you’re here, come join the roaster for an adventure to choose your pound of beans, and roast it here together. Rad.
Gorge Weather
Unfortunately, it’s going to be hot and sunny today, meaning there are no raindrops and no rainbows predicted in the next 24 hours. But we will have plenty of falling photons. Are photons subject to gravity? I’m not sure… anyway…
Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and low 90’s this afternoon with light east wind. Tomorrow sees marine clouds move in to Portland and maybe filter into the western Gorge. We’ll see sunshine and strong wind in the Hood, with temps in the low 60’s early and mid 80’s in the afternoon. Thursday may start off with a few scattered low clouds near Hood River, but we’ll see sunshine and strong wind during the day, with temps in the upper 50’s early and low 80’s in the afternoon. No rain is predicted this week. No rainbows either. But you can still send me rainbow photos.
Road and Mountain Biking
The dirt was still epic yesterday morning. Dirtastic. Dirtgasmic. Amazeballs dirt. Get out and ride early today, because 90 degree temps are going to suck the moisture from the soil. And do your road biking early too, because the later it gets, the more east wind you’re going to run into. And the higher up you get, the more east wind you’ll find.

River Levels
I forgot to call Wet Planet for the White Salmon level yesterday, but it must be above 2.25′, because they aren’t running Husum Falls yet. The Klickitat is at 1250cfs. The John Day dam is putting out 238-300kcfs and The Dalles dam is reading 252kcfs. Columbia river temp is 64 degrees at The Dalles Dam.
Events – email me if I’ve missed any outdoor-related events
We’ve got a last-minute wind event happening this week: either Friday or Saturday at the Spring Creek Fish Hatchery, it’s the Freedom Frenzy freestyle windsurfing event. It’s wind dependent, of course, but I suspect it will be on Friday if nothing changes in the long-range forecast.
Closer to now, we have this evening’s fun events: Pickup touch rugby at 5:30 at the Hood River Marina, Triathlon practice at 6:15 at Mayer Park, with some beginner open water swim instruction at 6pm, $12 Prime Rib at Cebu from 5-9pm and outdoor music at the Ruins at Springhouse, 5-9pm, free and all ages before 7pm, and much safer due to a $3 cover charge and adults-only after 7pm.
Have an awesome day today!
