Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies continue for the rest of the week with a possible break on Thursday as high pressure builds over the northwest. If there is a break, it’ll be short lived – stronger westerlies return on Friday and wind of some sort sticks around for the weekend.

For Tuesday, a trough of low pressure moving inland brings gusty westerlies and a chance of thunder along for the ride. As the system moves east of the Cascades this afternoon, westerlies jump in response. Morning wind will be in the 21-24 range from Viento to Moiser with 10-13 in other locations. We’ll have gusty 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus by late morning. Get it while it’s there, because the wind will likely drop in the western Gorge as the weather system moves through. After noon or so, the wind jumps to gusty 27-31 from Rowena to Rufus with gusty 18-23 in the western Gorge. River flow is 139kcffs and temp is 68 degrees.

Marine clouds fill in as far as Hood River on Wednesday morning in the wake of this low pressure system. Morning westerlies will be 10-13 in the west and 18-22 east of The Dalles. Don’t jump in your car, because high pressure and northerly flow builds quickly on Wednesday. Afternoon wind dies to “nearly calm” from Rowena eastward and builds to 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier.

Thursday’s a bit of a tricky forecast. While models indicate calm wind or perhaps light easterlies, gut instinct says light westerlies. For now, let’s just go with that “light westerlies” in the 4-7 range with calm wind a distinct possibility. Strong wind returns on Friday with gusty 25-29.

Road and Mountain Biking

All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Mt. Margaret still has snow. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill!
