Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Monday was quite the powder day on the mountain, and that’s why I skipped out on the forecast – I had a terrible case of FOMO! Glad I went and rode some lifts. Now I’m ready for another round of skating. And hey, what a coincidence… Teacup is throwing in an added bonus grooming day for Tuesday! Anywhere you go on Mt. Hood, you’re likely to find excellent packed powder groom whether you’re skating or sliding down the lift-serve terrain.

Tuesday starts clear and turns partly to mostly cloudy as instability and orographics add some clouds. The snow level will be 500-1000′ early, 2000′ in the afternoon, and back down to 0-1000′ overnight. Up to 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast for up to an inch of new snow. Wind: NW 25-30 in the morning, NW 20-25 in the afternoon, WNW 10 in the evening, and SW 5-10 after midnight.

Wednesday will be clear, but clouds quickly thicken as a warm front moves closer. Light snow arrives early evening. The snow level will be 0-1000′ in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 5000′ after midnight. Overnight, 0.1” to 0.2” WE is forecast for 1-2” of dense new snow. Wind will be SW 5-10 in the morning and will slowly build to SW 15-25 after midnight.

Thursday starts with snow, switches to mixed precip, transitions to rain, and returns to snow after midnight. The snow level will be 5000′ early, 6500′ in the afternoon, 4500′ around midnight, and 4000′ early Friday morning. Models disagree on how much precipitation will fall; we’re probably looking at an inch of water equivalent, at least. That comes as snow, mixed precip, rain, and then snow again. Perhaps a few inches of snow will be on the ground by 5am Friday. Wind: SW 15-25 in the morning, SSW 20-35 in the afternoon, and SW 30-45 overnight.

Friday’s forecast has transitioned from rain (prior forecasts) to snow. The snow level is forecast to be 4000′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and down to 1500′ after midnight. Hey! What happened? I thought we were having a warm and sunny end to the week. Apparently that forecast changed. Instead, we’ll pick up 0.3” to 0.4” WE during the day, for 3-4” new snow. Same overnight. Wind: SW 20-35ish becoming westerly at 15-20ish overnight. There’s quite a bit of model spread for the weekend, so let’s leave it for now and pick this back up, well, probably tomorrow evening… You know, like I promised multiple times earlier this season… that I would switch the snow forecast to the evening…

Cycling

Cows are going in soon on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. On to trails… It’s muddy – we got over half an inch of rain on Tuesday. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
