Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s another big powder day on Mt. Hood! Half a foot accumulated last night, and just over a foot fell in the last 24 hours. That’s two feet of dry powder in two days. Up to a foot is forecast by tomorrow morning, and then we switch to lighter, intermittent snowfall through Wednesday. Models are coalescing around a bit of an atmospheric river Thursday into Friday (snow then rain) before a significant warmup (sunshine) for the weekend.

Sunday’s just another April pow day. The snow level will be 1000′ all day and will fall as low as 0-500′ overnight. About 0.6” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today for 6-8” dry powder. Another 0.3” WE is forecast tonight for 3-4” more.. Wind will be W 30 all day and will turn to NW 25-35 after midnight.

Light, orographic snowfall on Monday morning gives way to a possible period of clear sky before instability kicks off clouds and flurries in the afternoon. The snow level will be 0-500′ in the morning, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 0-1000′ overnight. Just 0.1” WE is forecast during the day for an inch or so of snow. Same overnight. Wind: NW 25-35 all day turns to W 20-25 after midnight.

Tuesday looks snowy. The snow level will be 0-1000′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 1000-1500′ overnight. About 0.5” WE is forecast during the day for 5-6” new snow. A trace is in the cards overnight. Wind: W 20-25 in the morning, NW 10-20 in the afternoon, and light/variable overnight.

We should see some sun on Wednesday morning before afternoon instability brings clouds. A couple inches of snow are forecast overnight with the snow level around 4000′. Thursday starts with heavy, dense snowfall and switches to rain overnight. Models haven’t settled on precipitation quantity yet, so we’ll keep watching. Models do indicate a warming/drying trend over the weekend with the warmest temps we’ve seen all year. Here comes spring skiing!

Gorge Wind Forecast

A couple days of moderate westerlies give way to not-much-wind for a few days. That’s going to make the orchardists happy, but it’s not so great for wind sports. Sunday starts out with basically zero gradient and light/variable wind. Westerlies spick up to 15-18 from Stevenson to The Dalles early afternoon, but they’ll stay light out east. Add in some instability for very gusty wind. Mid-afternoon we’ll have gusty 21-24 from Stevenson to Rufus. Yesterday’s river flow range was 83-122kcfs, river temp is 44F, and high temp forecast is 48F. Monday starts with 7-10 west of The Dalles and 14-17 to the east. Afternoon wind picks up to gusty 21-24 (with showers) from Stevenson to Avery with 11-14 out east. High temp: 48F. Tuesday starts with calm wind and drizzle in he west with 11-14 in the eastern Gorge. Afternoon: 10-13 all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. As of this morning, Wednesday and Thursday both look light and variable. That, of course, is subject to change!

Cycling

Cows are going in soon on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. On to trails… It’s muddy – we got over half an inch of rain on Tuesday. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
