Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s not quite glassy out there on this fine Tuesday morning, but it’s pretty darn close. If the model forecasts hold, this is the last glassy day we’ll see for a good long while. Models are still a bit uncertain about Sunday, but all-in-all, things look good for windsports! Temps will hover between 85 and 90 degrees through Saturday, perhaps through Sunday.
Tuesday, however, starts light and variable with gradients of 0.02 (pdx-dls) and 0.00 out east. Not much at all happens this morning. Go for a road ride or some other sort of no-wind activity. Westerlies pick up to 7-10 between Stevenson and Viento early afternoon. Evening westerlies, thermally driven, should be in the 14-17 range between Stevenson and The Dalles. Slightly stronger wind is possible if we get lucky. River flow readings are 162-208kcfs, river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast is 89F.
Wednesday sees the ridge of high pressure move east, the heat low set up in the desert, and a weak disturbance move closer as the day goes on. That’ll increase the wind, but also likely make it a bit up and down. Expect the day to start with 16-19 between Viento and Mosier with 10-13 at Stevenson and 7-10 east of Mosier. Midday: 21-24 form Stevenson to Mosier with 13-16 near Doug’s and 7-10 out east. Afternoon: 22-26 from Hood River to Avery with 17-22 between Stevenson and Swell and at Rufus. In other words, the incoming disturbance is likely to disturb the wind quality in the afternoon. Eastern Gorge: 10-13 at Arlington. High temp: 90F.
Marine clouds make it to Stevenson on Thursday morning but quickly dissipate. Dawn patrol wind will be 20-23 from Viento to Hood River. Midday westerlies climb to 23-26 from Stevenson to Mosier (looks like a good day for a downwinder). 25-28 is possible between Mosier and Doug’s in the afternoon. Rufus maxes out in the low 20’s or perhaps a bit more. Deeper marine clouds are forecast on Friday as is strong wind. Models currently call for a windy day on Saturday. The deterministic GFS is all on board with a strong west wind day Sunday. The ensembles are not. That said, onshore flow should continue with hotter weather in the desert. Despite a forecast for a heat wave next week, models are hinting at continued onshore flow… fingers crossed!

Local-ish Events
Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! It’s a busy week for sailboat racing in Cascade Locks: the Optimist Nationals are happening. The Gorge Paddle Challenge runs Friday through Sunday in Hood River.
Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.
Cycling
Falls Creek is open. All the 44 Road trails are open with a couple of caveats: Lookout Mountain is clear. Fifteen Mile has lots of trees down. Plains of Abraham is open and is rideable. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
