Thursday. Wind, wind, wind, wind.

DSC_3821-Edit
For those of you who didn’t get out on the river yesterday, it’s all good, because you’ll have plenty more chances over the next several days. For those of you who spent yesterday on the river, that’s great, and hopefully you saved some energy for today and the next few days! It’s going to be windy enough today to make for rainbows and unicorns, so keep an eye upwind early for rainbows in the spray, and keep an eye out for breaking and munching waves on the river. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

The 5am gradient was, just like yesterday, .19 from Portland to The Dalles. Added to that was a .07 gradient from The Dalles to Pasco. With nothing happening in the upper atmosphere today, other than a massive synoptic-scale west gradient, we’ll see a nuking day on the river. Expect 23-26 right off the bat from Viento to Rufus. Other locations will be in the teens. By mid to late morning, lasting through the afternoon, we’ll see 28-32 from Viento to Rufus, with Stevenson and Arlington at 26-30 today. Swell, as usual, will back off late in the afternoon.

See below for details.

Looking at Friday, models suggest less gradient coupled with a weak weather disturbance that moves into BC in the morning. That should leave us with 20-23 from Hood River to Doug’s first thing in the morning. By late morning or early afternoon, we’re looking at 23-26 from Stevenson to Rufus.

Saturday morning looks similar to Friday, with a weak system moving into BC and a 21-24 start near Hood River. Saturday afternoon looks quite windy as stability returns to the atmosphere. Expect 28-32 from Viento to Arlington on Saturday afternoon. As of right now, Sunday and Monday both look like upper 20’s.

Random Morning Thoughts

interpret one another’s reactions in a relational manner. To make this concrete, if someone snaps at us, we may assume that we’ve done something wrong, we may assume that the person doesn’t like us, or we may make some other assumption about the intent of the other person. Our interconnected minds make these connections because, I think, we’re wired for relationship.

If we want to have smoother interactions with others, if we want to be less impacted by the behavior of others, it’s important to recognize a couple of things. First, our nervous systems are striving to keep us safe in relationship, because that’s how humans survive: through relying on others. Next, we need to understand that people around us often react out of past experiences. People keep themselves safe by learning from the past (however dysfunctional the past may be).

When we understand these two things, we can hold others with compassion. When they do stuff that feels bad to us and doesn’t make sense in the context of a situation, we can bring compassion to the situation, rather than anger. We can understand that somebody’s reaction isn’t about anything we’ve done. Rather, it’s about something they’ve experienced in the past. With that understanding, we can let the situation wash over us, leave us still standing solid, and allow us to respond with kindness and compassion.

Oh, and you can hold yourself with that view too. You also deserve compassion. Have an awesome day!
