Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

As is usual this time of year when the weather pattern is active, models are bouncing all over the place on wind speeds from day to day. Yesterday morning brought a lot of excitement about today. Models have now backed off on the wind. If you look at the deterministic GFS, you’d also give up hope for Saturday. Don’t do that – the ensembles are still (mostly) calling for a windy day.

Let’s look at Thursday: instead of starting with Dawn Patrol, we’re starting with light westerlies and 30.14/30.11/30.09 pressures. Gradients: 0.03/0.02. By late morning, the wind picks up to 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River. Afternoon: gusty 20-23 from Stevenson to Avery. Smoke is really going to pick up this afternoon as west wind sends bad air from the Nakia Creek fire this way. High temp: 72F.

Friday’s rain is coming in much earlier than originally predicted, and that’s going to stop the wind. You may get a brief 16-19mph dawn patrol all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. By mid to late morning, the wind will drop to 10-13 and then fall farther to LTW under heavy rain from midday on. High temp: 55F!

The deterministic GFS only calls for W 17-20 on Saturday after a calm start. It also calls for rain for the first half of the day. Most members of the ensembles are much, much windier. So, let’s hold off on a prediction but hold out hope for wind. Most members of the ensembles are calling for teens on Sunday.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! The annual Winter Weather Conference is Saturday morning at OMSI. Teacup has a work party scheduled for Saturday morning. Stay tuned for possible changes to that due to weather. Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint and Post n’ Pinot are done for the season due to darkness. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!

Cycling

It’s dusty out there, but it won’t be dusty much longer! Hood River County has reopened all motorized trails to motorized use. Hospital Hill, Underwood, and Whoopdee have reopened. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding.

The road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. In theory, the Courtney Road closure was to end October 15th. Lemme know if you know if it has reopened. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
