Gorge Wind Forecast

Not much wind is forecast for the next few days as a powerful fall system drapes itself over the NW. For Thursday, expect a round of easterlies that will probably be just strong enough for windsports. Not much happens early in the morning. By 10am or 11am, the wind should pick up to 15-20 between Rooster and Viento. It drops to 10-15 in the afternoon in that stretch of river. To the east, the wind will be nearly calm, but we should see E 0-5mph in the afternoon. River flow is 71,400cfs, river temp is 68F, and high temp forecast is 71F.

Friday starts calm and cloudy. As this beast of a cold front approaches from the northwest in the afternoon, the wind picks up. Don’t expect high quality wind; you’ll find very gusty 14-18 from Stevenson to Arlington after 2pm or so. High temp: 73F. Saturday starts with pouring rain and transitions to showers that extend far to the east. Westerlies will be in the gusty 10-13 or less range all day, all through the Gorge. Sunday starts light westerly. It may pick up to gusty 19-23 in the eastern gorge, but thunder is also likely as are random downpours. That’s it for the weekend. I’ll probably take a day off somewhere in there since there’s not much wind to discuss!

Cycling

Dirt Surfer is temporarily closed while a bridge is replaced. It should reopen by the beginning of next week. With all this rain coming up, people are naturally wondering when trails will reopen. It’s usually not the first rain that does it – fire season needs to be over, not just dampened. Wait for clear direction from landowners before you return to their trails.

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users. DNR land in Eastern Washington (Buck Creek / Nestor Peak) is all closed to recreation due to fire danger. Columbia Hills is now closed to fire danger.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Gunsight, Underhill. Siouxon has reopened, but it is burned and heartbreaking according to trip reports.
