Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hopefully you got out to Rufus yesterday (or somewhere else) for a good session on the river. Not much is predicted through the weekend. Thursday starts with pressures of 30.19-30.17-30.13 for gradients of 0.02 and 0.04. We can affectionately refer to that as “not enough”. Models agree. Westerlies in the low teens near Arlington this morning join westerlies at less than 10mph everywhere else. By the afternoon, the wind will be “light”. River flow readings are 68-96kcfs, river temp is 61F, and high temp forecast is 60F.

Friday’s wind will be less than 10mph out of the west. Same on Saturday. Sunday afternoon may see the wind pick up to gusty 12-15 out of the west ahead of the next weather system. The long-range forecast doesn’t look much better, but we’ll still keep watching it!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Timberline and Meadows picked up 2-3” additional snow yesterday morning with excellent orographic support. The skiing was pretty darn good, but hiking for turns is pretty darn hard! And now you have your explanation for why there wasn’t a forecast yesterday – someone was hiking for turns! The roads up there were an absolute skating rink down low and covered in a foot of snow up high, at least early in the morning. ODOT is hiring winter maintenance specialists… The weather for the next several days will just be rainy up to ski resort elevations, but snow looks likely to return sometime between Monday and Tuesday.

Thursday will turn sunny on the mountain, and it’ll be dry all day. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 3500′ this morning, 10,000′ this afternoon, and 9500′ overnight under high overcast sky. Wind: W 20 in the morning, SW 15-30 in the afternoon, and W 30 overnight.

Friday kicks off with high clouds and quickly adds some drizzle. That puts an end to the good skiing conditions! The snow level will be 9500′ early, and 8000′ when the drizzle starts. It’ll slowly fall to 6500′ overnight. As of this morning, the forecast calls for about 0.2” rain during the day and 0.2” rain overnight. Wind will be W 30 most of the day and will swing to WSW 25 in the evening.

Saturday looks clear and warm becoming cloudy after midnight. The FAF will be 6500′ in the morning, 8000′ in the afternoon, 6000′ in the evening, and 9000′ after midnight. No precip. Wind: WSW 25-30 in the morning, W 20 in the afternoon, and W 15 overnight. Sunday will probably be dry, but a slight change in the conditions could bring in some drizzle. Monday looks rainy, and Tuesday looks snowy. There’s quite a bit of spread in precip predictions starting Monday, so I’ll hold off on any thoughts of hiking for turns early next week. Get your snow gear tuned and ready for when the snow does come!

Hood River Weather Forecast

High overcast sky this morning should turn clear during the day and adds high clouds overnight. Temps will be in he mid 40’s early and near 60 later. Light westerlies. No rainbows. Friday will be drizzly and gray. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and upper 50’s later. Light westerlies. 68% chance of rainbows. Saturday currently looks partly cloudy, then clear, then high overcast overnight. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and upper 50’s later. Light westerlies. No rainbows. Sunday will probably be cloudy and dry but could pick up some drizzle.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Teacup has a work party Saturday (29). HRATS have a work party at Family Man scheduled for Saturday (29). Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!

Cycling

Head out to the trails for some brown pow today! Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. Hood River County has reopened all motorized trails to motorized use. Hospital Hill, Underwood, and Whoopdee have reopened. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
