Gorge Wind Forecast

A dramatic change in the weather overnight (well, dramatic to weather geeks, anyway) has left us in a setup that’s much more conducive to west wind. Apparently this setup is also more conducive to sleeping, because I didn’t wake up until 8:15am, which must be some sort of record for me. PR sleeping!

Anyway, the western Gorge is being impacted by marine clouds this morning and the eastern Gorge is being impacted by lingering instability from yesterday’s action. Gradients to start the day were .10 (pdx-dls) and .11 (dls-psc). Just going by the numbers, I’d tag the Lyle to Rufus stretch as the place to be. For the morning, you’ll find gusty 15-20 from Stevenson to Hood River and gusty 23-27 east of there. As unstable air moves east of the Gorge and marine clouds burn back this afternoon, we’ll have 26-30 from Viento to Arlington with a chance 29-33 from Lyle to Rufus. Stevenson will likely stay partly cloudy today with max wind at 19-23.

On Friday, offshore high pressure combines with inland low pressure for a nice, big cross-Cascade gradient. Marine clouds will probably make it past Hood River again. That sets us up for Dawn Patrol at 23-26 from Mosier to Arlington. In the afternoon, we should have 27-31 from Viento to Arlington with 19-23 at Stevenson. If you are interested in foil SUP, Big Winds has a free clinic with Dave Kalama on Friday afternoon at 4:30. Free beer.

Upper flow turns more northerly on Saturday, limiting the marine air. We’ll start the day with 12-15 from Mosier to The Dalles with 8-12 east of there. In the afternoon, the eastern Gorge wind drops to 5-10. Stevenson to The Dalles maxes out at 22-25 or so. Sunday looks interesting… the daytime hours look light, 13-16 or 10-13 depending on the model. Late in the day, meaning later than 5pm, an approaching system drives the gradients way up, giving us a chance, mind you just a chance, of 26-30 from Stevenson to Hood River. Monday continues to look like mid or upper 20’s on both the GFS and Euro.

BONUS: Jones Thursday: 5-10. Friday: 5-10. Saturday: 21-24. Sauvie’s: 12-15 the next three days. Coast (north/central/south). Thursday: W5/W5/15-20, W swell 3′ at 10 seconds. Friday: W5/15-20/30+, W 3′ @ 10. Saturday: 15-20/20-25/30+, W 3′ @ 10.

Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour – June 30th

If you haven’t ridden the roads around Trout Lake, you’re missing out. These epic rides wind through forests and past waterfalls (and wild berries). Traffic is minimal. Cell service is spotty. And that’s why the Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour is the perfect opportunity. Sag wagons. Repair support. Food. Water. Lunch. Dinner. Four ride options include an 11½-mile Family Friendly ride (just $10 to ensure accessibility to all families), a 51-mile Trout Lake – BZ Corner – Glenwood Loop, a 54-mile Forest Loop, and a 105-mile Infinity Ride. Click here, now, to get signed up today before the ride fills up.

Road and Mountain Biking

Well… the rain didn’t exactly cooperate with the trails. Best guess for what got rain last night: Kitchen Sink. Post probably picked up .05”, enough to help a little, but not enough for a paradigm shift. Other news… High Prairie down to 450 is open. Still only have one attempt on Gunsight two weeks ago that took 1 hour and 48 minutes, 48 minutes longer than it should have. So.. probably trees and snow, but possible to get through in some way… No guarantees!
