Gorge Wind Forecast

Today’s A It’s Wednesday morning, and Tuesday sure was a pleasant surprise, wasn’t it! I honestly don’t know where that came from; earlier marine air than forecast? Anyway, we’re ahead of the game with the cooling, and strong westerlies continue. Afternoon chances of elevated thunderstorms stick around, but may only add to the scenery; marine air and associated inversion will likely keep the wind field steady, at least west of Rufus.

Gradients are similar this morning to yesterday – .13 pdx-dls, but today there’s an added bonus of .05 out east. Dawn Patrol wind will be 23-26 from Viento to Moiser with 15-18 everywhere else. Strong high pressure well off Vancouver Island combines with a heat low in the desert and long-lasting clouds in Portland for another windy day. Let’s call it 26-29 from Stevenson to Rufus mid-morning on with short periods of 30+ possible near Doug’s this afternoon. Roosevelt: 19-23, building to the upper 20’s late in the day. Will it die in the Corridor this afternoon? Probably not, as the clouds aren’t predicted to burn off in the metro area until mid-afternoon. River flow is 128kcfs and temp is 70 degrees, perfect for your downwinder from Viento.

On to Thursday: the marine layer deepens, and the City hangs in the gloom for most of the day. Clouds will likely push past Hood River on Thursday morning, but they’ll burn back quickly for a nukefest. Dawn Patrol looks like 26-29+ from Mosier (30-35) to Rufus. Afternoon wind: gusty 23-26 near Stevenson with 28-32+ from Stevenson to Arlington. 30-35 seems possible from Rowena to Rufus.

Friday’s marine layer looks just as deep, but offshore low pressure and an approaching cold front will likely start to impact wind quality. With a ginormous heat low in the desert, tho, the wind will continue to be strong. Dawn Patrol: 23-27 from Hood River to Arlington. Rest of the day: 28-32 from Viento to Rufus with 23-27 at Arlington and Stevenson. Strong westerlies continue ahead/east of a cold front and possible rain Saturday. Westerlies probably drop into the teens on Sunday.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Wednesday: W5/W5/NW5, NW swell 3′ at 8 seconds. Thursday: NW5/NW5/NW10, NW 3′ @ 8. Friday: NW5/N10/LTSW, S 2′ @ 15. Jones Wednesday: 26-29. Thursday: 5-10. Friday: 10-13. Sauvie’s Wednesday: 12-15. Thursday: 9-12 late. Friday: 7-10.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Clear sky this morning with smoke in the air might end up with some giant thunderheads again this evening. Temps will be in the upper 60’s early and upper 80’s later. Muggy. Strong westerlies. No rainbows. Thursday starts off with marine clouds, clears midday, and ends with a chance of thunderheads. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and near 80 later. Muggy. Nuking westerlies. 1% chance of rainbows. Friday starts cloudy, turns clear midday, and ends with thunderheads. Temp will be near 60 early and near 80 later. Muggy. Strong westerlies. 1% chance of rainbows. There’s a decent chance of some rain on Saturday as a cold front swings through.

Road and Mountain Biking

Industrial Fire Level is now Level III. Moto is no longer allowed on trails or unimproved roads, including in Post Canyon. Riorden Hill Road is closed between the end of the pavement and Family Man. Family Man is also closed, as is access to it, meaning you will need to choose other routes to Upper Post. Red Hill Road is theoretically closed to cars due to logging. Folks have ridden it on bikes on the weekend, but ride at your own risk. Chip sealing will happen on Highway 30 between Mosier and Rowena Crest August 12-14.

All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.

Upcoming Events

If you’re out on the river or in the woods this week, keep an eye on the sky – we have thunderstorm chances all the way through Friday. One more piece of forest news is that we’re now at Fire Level III – motorized use is prohibited on all trails and unimproved roads at this time. Trails are still open to bicycles, good news for the women’s Post n’ Pinot mountain bike ride from Dirty Fingers at 5:30 tonight. Also good news for the Post Canyon 50k ultramarathon Saturday..

All sorts of fun stuff happens at the end of the week – on Friday night, there’s a street dance in The Dalles and a free concert at Hood River’s waterfront Park. Stevenson has the free waterfront music festival Friday and Saturday, and the movie Mary Poppins plays at Sorosis Park on Saturday evening.
