Random Morning Thoughts

Yesterday I had a one-day Temira shutdown. Now I see why those congressmen are doing this. I had a lot more play time when I wasn’t writing a morning forecast.

Wind guessings, prognosticatings and musings

Today brings east wind at 10-13 at Steven’s Locks and Rooster’s Rocks. Tomorrow brings a weak weather system through early. After it passes, high pressure builds off the coast. Combine that with the passing front, and we should see westerlies at 15-18 early and 21-24 in the afternoon. It’s likely you’ll find the strongest wind (maybe even 24+) from Lyle to Maryhill, but there’s a decent chance of 15-18 near Hood River.

Looks like the westerlies will continue at 21-24 on Friday, after a slow start. Indicators are that westerlies of some sort will grace the Columbia on Saturday and Sunday looks like light east wind.

Plain old weather

The Nothing decided the Gorge was a lovely nest last night. Hopefully it will move on quickly, leaving us with sunny skies. That’s the forecast for today: Nothing in the morning and sunshine later on. Tomorrow looks cloudy and dry, Friday likely brings Nothing in the morning and sun later on. For the weekend, there’s a chance of showers Saturday morning and Sunday looks dry.

Mountain biking

I went for a jog in Post Canyon yesterday evening, and it was pretty muddy. I’d say it was muddy enough that riding there this morning is a no-go. Maybe this afternoon? And speaking of Post Canyon, I’d like to thank everyone for all the enthusiasm for fixing trails. I’d also like to remind you that all the non-motorized trails in Post have official adopters. If you see something needing repair, please contact the trail adopter to ask permission, because unauthorized repairs can have unanticipated consequences. You can get the name of the adopter by calling Henry at the HRC Forestry department at 7-7089.

Events n’ stuff – Please email with upcoming events related to the outdoors

After a lot of back-and-forth between LUBA, farmers, Parks n’ Rec, and the Board of Commissioners, the time for a last (hopefully) Barrett Park vote has come. The Commission will take testimony on whether the park will “significantly change local farming practices”. If you can testify to this not happening, please show up and help make this park happen. (Yep, I did just take a side – this one’s important to me.)

Also tonight, your friends at Mt. Hood Meadows will be at Double Mountain taking pass photos from 4pm-8pm. No, they will not be providing you with free beer. If you’d like to get your Om on before you get riled up thinking of fresh pow, Flow Yoga has Karma Yoga (free or by donation) this evening from 4pm-5:15.

Coming up this weekend, Skibowl has trail work parties both Saturday and Sunday. “Why,” you ask, “should I do work for a for-profit corporation for free?” Well, you’re not. They’ll give you a lift ticket for each day you work, and they’ll also feed you pizza and beer at the Ratskeller in Govy after you work. Yes, that’s right. Your friends at Skibowl love you.

At the Skamania County Fairgrounds on Saturday, it’s the Food Forum, brought to you by Gorge Grown. Lots of talks on food-related stuff. Lots of kids’ activities. Food. Mmmm.

Also Saturday, CGWA has a work party at Doug’s Beach from 9-noon.

Have an awesome day today!

Monday. 10/7. Gorge wind. Events. Mt. Hood snow (briefly)…

Random Morning Thoughts

I like open-ended questions. I never know where they will take me…

Wind guessings, prognosticatings and musings

Despite the fact that it’s 100% gloomy out there today, you’ll have a chance to get on the water. Yes. Believe it. As an upper level low moves onshore near Vancouver Island (Canadians have all the fun, don’t they?), we’ll see the wind pick up in the eastern regions of the Gorge. High pressure building off the coast will amplify this situation: expect 28-32 east of The Dalles after noon today, with a chance of wind at Doug’s/Rowena/Lyle.

That offshore high hangs around tomorrow, driving westerlies at 21-24 from The Dalles to Arlington. We’ll likely see slightly stronger wind before noon, but it will fade as the day goes on, so I’m sticking with my 21-24 story. Why? Because which of you are really going to drive to Arlington before noon?

Wednesday will probably bring east wind of some sort.

Plain old weather

It’s raining. Sprinkling, really. This will continue this morning, and then, as that low moves inland, we’ll see the clouds start to break up. Sunshine will dominate the eastern Gorge this afternoon. Tomorrow sees random showers in the western Gorge with sunshine out east. We’ll probably see that gloomy inversion crap on Wednesday, followed by afternoon sun.

The snow level will be at 6000′ this morning, dropping to 5500′ this afternoon. Tomorrow sees the snow level at 5500′ early and 5000′ late. On Sunny Wednesday, the free air freezing level will be 8000′. Total snow accumulation over the next couple of days will be 2-5” at 5000′.

Mountain biking

It seems to be raining on our trails this morning.

Events n’ stuff – Please email with upcoming events related to the outdoors

There are two events tonight: At 6:15pm, Shortt Supply hosts a talk by Kevin Hanson, Board Certified
Orthopedic Clinical Specialist. You’ll learn about running mechanics, proper footwear (“barefoot running shoes” is one of my favorite phrases…), and lots of other stuff. Snacks provided by Shortt Supply will fuel your brain while it learns.

At 7pm, Dog River Coffee hosts this year’s Powderwhore’s movie. Someday I’d like to be featured in a tele skiing movie, because those people ski some amazing snow and I want to do that. $10. 7pm.

Have an awesome day today!
