Random Morning Thoughts

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend. I’ll be at a conference both Friday and Saturday, so will probably not be able to do a forecast either day.

There are some businesses that are just plain awesome. Dirt Hugger is one. Too much food waste at your business or municipality? Dirt Hugger will take it away! All that food waste becomes food-for-your-garden compost. Temira’s guerilla garden agrees: Dirt Hugger compost is the best! Pick it up or have it delivered. Wind guessings, prognosticatings and musings

Some of you probably went windsurfing or kiting yesterday. Some of you will likely do the same today. It’ll be cloudy in the western Gorge, keeping wind speeds in the low to mid teens. East of The Dalles, find yourself 21-24 today after the sun rises and the air warms up a bit.

High pressure settled over the region tomorrow gives the Gorge east wind at 15-18, at most. Then on Saturday, a strong low pressure system swings across the Cascades early in the morning, and high pressure builds offshore behind the low, giving the Gorge an all-day dose of 30-40 east of the low clouds, so likely at Maryhill and Arlington, but possibly at Lyle/Rowena/Doug’s too. Looks like the eastern Gorge westerlies will stick around in the mid-twenties on Sunday.

Plain old weather and Mt. Hood snow

I know I’ve said it over and over, but I think tomorrow really is the last of the nice weather. Get the sun while you can, because we’re about to see winter kick in full-force. Today brings a few showers. Tomorrow looks dry. By midnight tomorrow night, we’ll see rain, and that rain will continue in the western Gorge on Saturday.

On Mt. Hood, winter is starting: The snow level will be 9000′ today and 10,000′ tomorrow. Ok, that’s not very wintry, but read on:

By Saturday morning, the snow level will fall to 5000′, falling further to 2000′ by Saturday evening. The bulk of the precipitation will fall before the snow level drops, but strong orographics will keep the snow falling on Mt. Hood even after the rain stops in the valleys.

So, on Saturday, during the day, expect .7-1.0” water value, for 5-7” of rather dense new snow. Snowfall continues Saturday night into Sunday, for another .4-.7” WV, for another, much fluffier, 5-8” of new snow. Wind on Saturday will be WSW 50 early, W 50 midday, and WNW 40+ in the afternoon.

Sunday sees the snow level around 2000′ all day, with light orographic snow showers for .1-.2” WV, or a couple more inches of snow. Wind on Sunday will be NW 35-40+.

Seriously, this is IT for the 44 Road trails. Go get them today or tomorrow, because they are going to be gone by Saturday afternoon. Also, ODOT will start sanding and plowing their roads on November 1st, so be prepared for gravel on state roads after that time.

With the snow level forecast to drop to 2000′ on Sunday, you may want to ride all your higher-elevation road rides today or tomorrow.

Events – email me if I’ve missed any outdoor-related events

Today is Halloween. Apparently there’s a big party at Double Mountain this evening. I am sure there are lots of parties in other places too.

I still don’t have much on the calendar for this weekend. Meadows has their Winter Kickoff (with cooperation from Mother Nature) this weekend at the resort. You can get your pass photo taken and also purchase gear with special passholder discounts. But you’ll need snow tires or chains to get back down from the mountain, most likely, so be prepared. Speaking of snow and passes and stuff, if you want a season pass from MHM, buy it by the end of the day Sunday, because prices go up after that.

Don’t forget to set your clocks back this weekend. Bah.

Have an awesome day today!

I woke up this morning with ‘The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald’ stuck in my head.

When the fall winds kick the surface of the Columbia into crashing whitecaps, only a few windsurfers and kiters contribute wakes to the wave-ridden chaos. Today, you have the opportunity to be one of the few. With a W .05 west gradient and starting temps at 34 degrees, you may have to wait for a warmup, but you will have wind. As a front pushes in this afternoon, expect gusty, up-and-down 23-26, first at Steven’s Locks, then at Hood River, then moving as far east as Maryhill. We may get lucky with a brief period of 26-30 today.

Tomorrow just brings leftover eastern Gorge wind at 22-25, packed in a Tupperware with morning western Gorge sprinkles. Brief high pressure builds on Friday, giving the wind a 180 degree spin, for easterlies at 22-25. On Saturday, expect very strong westerlies, especially at Arlington, as a deep low pressure system swings eastward.

Plain old weather and Mt. Hood snow

Today starts off mostly clear, but high clouds move in soon, and sprinkles move in overnight. Halloween starts with a few raindrops, but clears up in the afternoon. Friday should be dry and sunny (with maybe an inversion cloud early), and Saturday looks wet and rainy.

Up on Mt. Hood, we have the first pass-level sticking snow headed our way this weekend. Until then, expect a mix of rain and snow (mostly rain) out of the Wed/Thur system, and dry weather Friday. When this system hits Friday night into Saturday, we’ll see the snow level fall to 5500′ by Saturday morning and 2500′ by Saturday evening.

It’s a bit far out to be predicting snow amounts, but just for fun, I’ll do it anyway. Expect .8-1” water value for 4-6” of snow during the day on Saturday, as temps slowly drop. Then overnight into Sunday, expect another .4-.6” water value for 7-11” of snow. Then expect another .5” WV Sunday, for another 4-6”.

Early next week brings more wet weather, with the snow level hovering between 4000′ and 6000′, for additional accumulating resort snow.

You better get those 44 Road trails before Saturday, because they’re going to be done for the season after that.

I don’t have much on my calendar for next weekend yet. I know there’s stuff I’m missing, so please email me and let me know. I do know that Mt. Hood Meadows is having a winter kickoff event at the resort Saturday and Sunday. If you have a pass, you can score extra discounts on gear. I’m trying to determine exactly which gear, but haven’t heard back yet.

If you want a pass to Meadows, purchase it before the end of the day Sunday, because prices go up after November 3rd.

Thursday, in case you didn’t already know, is Halloween.

And one last thing: we change the clocks this weekend, going back to standard time and evening darkness. Total garbage, if you ask me. I’ll take that evening light over morning light any day.

Have an awesome day today!
