Today’s forecast. 9.19

Good morning!

This week’s report is brought to you by … me. Yes, me again. I’m not offering to clean your toilets today. I’m just offering to brighten up your rainy morning with a forecast. The showery weather continues today as a powerful jet segment slams into the warm air over the Northwest, drenching Oregon and Washington for much of the day today. As this system moves east, west winds will pick up a bit. It’s going to be gusty and inconsistent, but even so, I think we’ll see a slow build into the 17-20 range today. The westerlies should pick up around midday near Hood River, filling in further east a couple of hours later. There’s a decent chance of 20-24 today east of The Dalles..

It looks like we’ll see more consistent west winds tomorrow, as a low pressure trough moves eastward and the blocking upper level low disappears from the coast. Gusty westerlies blow in the 17-20 range, first out east, and then filling back to Mosier and Lyle.

If you want to hit the trails for some mountain biking, you may want to reconsider, as the trails are going to be pretty muddy today with all the rain. Post was greasy at 6pm yesterday, and it’s no better now. If you ride, you’re going to trash the trails. So, wait until the wind picks up this afternoon and dries out the trails a bit. If you want to watch some muddy bike racing today, the Hood River Cyclocross is at the Fairgrounds. Come cheer on local legend, the Darkness, Brad Urban!

And if you want to drive, the Bend Super D happens today, with lots of schwag and cash prizes!

Boaters, the Tieton is at 1650 cfs, the White Salmon is at 1.7 feet, the Klickitat was at 820 cfs, and the Hood was at 3.4 feet. Keep a close eye on the Hood today, because there’s a small chance it’s going to hit the magic 4 feet if the downpour continues in the mountains this afternoon.

Ski passes on sale now. 9/1

It’s starting to feel like fall, and now it’s official, because Mt. Hood Meadows passes go on sale today. Everyone’s been asking me the big question… how much are passes? Well, they’re the same price as last year, $449 for adults, except you no longer need a group to get that price. You just go online and buy a pass all by yourself.

It’s going to be an epic ski year, so consider getting a pass somewhere this year! I really don’t care where you buy a pass (well, as a Meadows employee, I do, but as a wind forecaster and snow forecaster, I don’t). I do care that you get in lots of powder turns this winter. Please get a pass or plan on lots of epic backcountry skiing. And please plan on picking up my sorry ass at China Gorge as I hitchhike to Meadows in a downpour.

But technically, it’s still summer, even though it’s cool and cloudy this morning. As the front moves east, west winds will follow. We’ll see gusty 15-19 under the clouds in the western Gorge today, with 21-24 east of The Dalles in the afternoon.

Coming up tomorrow, high pressure builds inland and a heat low sets up along the coast. This gives us east winds in the 20-24 range at Stevenson and Rooster Rock. This is a decent setup for the north and central Oregon coast too, where winds will blow in the 20-25 knot range with a 5 foot swell. It looks like sailable easterlies will hold on Friday.

At this point, it looks like we’ll see a return to west winds on Saturday. I am not sure yet about Sunday.

If you’ve been out mountain biking and you have a trail report you could share, I’d really appreciate it. I’m going to try and get out today, but I’d love to hear what trails, if any, have received enough rain to tamp down the dust.

Boaters, the White Salmon is at 1.75 feet and the Klickitat is still closed from milepost zero to milepost ten. If you’d like to go boating tonight, remember that the Kayak Shed’s shop paddle is meeting at Husum at 5:30 this evening for a run down the middle or the lower White Salmon.
