Good morning,

I think NOAA is pretty much right on with their call for light freezing rain this afternoon into this evening. As a matter of fact, I think they’re so right on that I’m going to pass on going to Portland today and now have to find something equally fun to do. Maybe I can go to The Dalles instead! It’s going to be cloudy today, and then around 4pm, we’ll see some very light freezing rain, continuing through 4am. Total precip shouldn’t be more than .1”, but freezing rain is freezing rain, and it’s probably best to stay off I-84 tonight. NOAA is right on with this, but they haven’t yet mentioned the strong possibility of another round of freezing rain through the Gorge on Saturday. It’s a long ways out to make a solid call, but take it into consideration when making your weekend plans. Also of note is the strong potential for no Nothing layer on Saturday morning, leaving us under high clouds and brighter light.

If you’re one of those Nordic folks, or you’d like to be, Sunday is Teacup’s annual XC party, with snacks and cocoa and tea and free skiing and $10 lessons (free if you’re a member). Register for lessons at 9:30. Fun starts at 10:30.

Up on Mt. Hood, the ski slopes are just going to see snow today, as they’ll be above the above-freezing layer of air. The snow level today will be around 4000′, with the air warming above freezing between 1500′ and 3500′ this evening. Snow starts around 4pm, for .1-.2” of water value for 1-2” of snow in the evening. Wind today will be S 15-25 early, rising to SW 35 in the afternoon.

Snow flurries continue Friday morning, with the snow level at 4000′ mid-morning, and 6000′ in the afternoon. Another .1-.2” WV falls between 4am and 10am, for 1-2” of new, after which skies become clear. Wind on Friday will be W 30 early, W 15 mid-morning and light and variable in the afternoon.

Saturday morning brings high clouds. Snow flurries start around 1pm, however, models are all over the place with precipitation amounts. It looks like we’ll see snow through 4am Sunday, but let’s just call it .1-.3” WV at this point, 2-3” of new. Wind on Saturday will be SW 15-25 all day.

Sunday starts off with flurries, becoming partly cloudy. Heavier snowfall moves in during the evening, but long-range models are suggesting a switch to rain overnight into Monday. Hard to tell this far out, with even Saturday’s models showing variation.

Have an awesome day today!

1/1 Happy New Year Mt. Hood and Gorge forecast

New Year’s Day
Wednesday
Thursday

The cold weather continues in the Gorge today. Actually, it’s going to continue for at least the next few days, so be careful out there. The roads are very icy. This is when those of you who’ve been cruising around on studded tires for the last month get to gloat over the responsible citizens running studless or all-season tires. I’m currently gloating. Joking aside, do be careful out there. It’s not you – it’s the folks who are cruising around on bald tires on ice.

Expect temps to stay below freezing today, with 30-40mph east wind at Stevenson and Rooster. If the models are right about tomorrow, we’ll wake to temps in the teens with 40-50mph easterlies in the western Gorge. There will likely be enough gradient for a chilly easterly breeze in Hood River and The Dalles too. On Thursday, we’re going to see another round of snow flurries, with up to an inch of snow falling between 7am and 1pm. Or maybe the storm track will change and we’ll see more… Anyway, we’re probably not going to see temps rise above freezing until sometime Friday, and even then, we may still not climb above 32 degrees in the Gorge. Sorry kids, but the snow and ice isn’t going anywhere. But then again, neither are the frozen waterfalls!

The big question is whether it’s going to be clear or gloomy over the next few days. I would have guessed clear, but it’s currently gloomy, so I guess I don’t know anything at all. Tomorrow looks like a better chance of broken Nothing, but if that doesn’t happen, your best escape will be up or west, not east. Thursday will be cloudy.

On Mt. Hood, it’ll be clear and sunny today, with the temp rising above freezing between 3000′ and 8000′ by this afternoon. Wind will be light, out of the NE at 10mph.

Wednesday looks sunny, with high clouds making their way in during the afternoon. It will be above freezing between 3000′ and 10000′ with light and variable wind becoming S 10-20 in the afternoon.

Expect snow to start around 7am on Thursday, with the freezing level at the surface, rising to 1000′ in the afternoon. Total precip will be .1-.2” water value for 1-2” of new snow. Wind on Thursday will be S 20-30 early, becoming SSW 30 mid-morning and SW 30 in the afternoon.

Friday looks partly cloudy with the snow level at 1000′ early. If the models are correct (and they are currently all over the place), temps will rise just above freezing from the surface all the way to 8000′ with SW wind and no precip. Beyond Friday, models just aren’t agreeing, so we’ll all have to play the wait-and-see game.

Have an awesome day today!
