Random Morning Thoughts

Gratitude Month, day 12: Today I am grateful for the Little Moab trail. I know, it seems inane, but I can be having the crappiest day in the world and one lap on that trail will make things a lot better.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s starting to look like we’ll see some snow this weekend on Mt. Hood. In the meantime, we’ll see some sprinkles today – just .1-.2” of rain – under cloudy sky. The snow level today will be 8000′ all day, dropping to 7000′ overnight. Wind will be SW 20-30 all day, going to WSW 20 overnight.

Wednesday looks sunny on Mt. Hood with the free air freezing level (FAF) around 6500′, dropping to 5000′ midday and rising to 9000 overnight. Wind will be NW 20 early, 30 midday, and 20 overnight. No precip.

Thursday looks partly cloudy on Mt. Hood. The FAF starts at 6500′, dropping throughout the day and ending up at 2500′ in the evening. Wind will be NW 20-30 all day.

Looks like a stronger system will move in Friday night and Saturday morning. There’s 1-2” of water value with this system. It’s a little early to make a call on the snow level – models currently show 5500′, so it’s hard to tell this far out whether we’ll see snow, rain, or a mix. I think it’s likely we’ll see decent snowfall, at least above 6000′, but that doesn’t really help Meadows and Skibowl open up. So, let’s wait a day or two and see how things shake out in the models…

Plain Old Local Weather

It’s a cloudy start to the day, and I suspect it will stay that way today. Tomorrow is a tough call. It’ll be clear on the mountain, but here in the Gorge… well, let’s call it dry with a cloudy start and hope that the westerlies clear out the low clouds. Thursday looks partly cloudy. If the long-range models are correct, it’s going to get mighty chilly here Saturday night and Sunday morning, but that’s a long way out. And don’t panic. The models aren’t showing any moisture with the cold air incursion.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Apparently I was wrong yesterday. I said 35-45 at Rooster. It actually blew 40-50, keeping all but a couple people off the water. Today will be more accessible, but it will die off early. Expect 24-28 at Rooster this morning with 15-18 at Stevenson, but the wind will go to glassy by 2pm or so, becoming westerly overnight. Tomorrow starts with westerlies at 13-15, picking up to 15-18 near Hood River and 21-24 from Mosier to Maryhill. Thursday brings westerlies in the low twenties.

Road and Mountain Biking

As of yesterday, before it started raining, the dirt in Post Canyon was in great shape, according to multiple sources. In the “this is surprising” category, I have a report that 8-Mile, Knebal and Bottle Prairie are once again snow-free, as is the lower half of the 450 trail. Over in Washington, the dirt at Syncline is in perfect shape. This was all reported to me before this morning’s sprinkles, so take it with a gram of mud.

Gratitude Month, day 11: Today I am grateful to our veterans for volunteering to serve our country. I am grateful that we live in a time and place where there is no need for a draft, and I am grateful to live in a country where I live free of the fear of bombs exploding in the streets or missiles falling from the sky.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

I am sorry to say that there’s not much snow in our future. Yesterday I mentioned the possibility of a very wet Thursday system, but that possibility has dissipated. The next chance for significant snowfall is next Friday/Saturday, but that’s way too far out to be predicting!

So, we’ll see the free air freezing level (FAF) around 10,000′ this morning, rising to 12,000′ this afternoon under partly cloudy sky. Wind will be SW 15 early, becoming S 20 in the afternoon.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, brings more clouds and a chance of showers on Mt. Hood. The snow level will be 8000′ early, falling to 7000′ by 4pm and 6000′ by 10pm. Total rainfall will be .1-.3”, falling between 4am and 4pm. Wind will be SW 30-40 early, SW 20-25 from 10am on, and W 20 overnight.

Precip will be long gone by Wednesday morning, leaving party cloudy sky. The free air freezing level will be 5500′ early, 7500′ early afternoon, and 9000′ in the evening. Wind will be WNW 25 early, dropping throughout the day.

Plain Old Local Weather

We’ll see partly to mostly cloudy sky today in the Gorge with temps in the 50’s. An incoming cold front tonight leaves us with a chance of showers the first half of tomorrow. Expect dry and partly cloudy weather on Wednesday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s pretty much nuking in the west end of the Gorge this morning. With a .19 east gradient and temps in the low 50’s, it’s going to be a fun day on the water! Expect 30-35 at Stevenson and 35-45 at Rooster Rock. Tomorrow brings easterlies at 15-18 early, fading quickly, and becoming westerlies at 13-15 in the afternoon. Wednesday brings light wind.

Road and Mountain Biking

The pavement was fantastic yesterday. I know the dirt is good at Syncline. Anyone have a Post Canyon report? Has it dried out enough to be rideable again?
