2nd Wind
Hey, 2nd Wind has moved. Find them on the corner of 2nd and State on the new pavement, with lots of parking and none of those pesky printout-style parking meters. The new store is awesome – swing by and check it out. With less foot traffic wandering in and out, 2nd on 2nd’s super knowledgeable staff will have more time to help you find the best gear for your playtime in the Gorge. And remember, they do used gear too – bring them your summer consignments. See you at 2nd on 2nd, and make sure to be at the official ribbon cutting on June 5th at 5pm!

Gorge Wind
The wind will start out light this morning, with the drifting air molecules driven by a .04 gradient from Portland to The Dalles. As an upper level low moves onshore, dragging colder air into the west side of the state later today, we’ll see the wind pick up. Expect 13-15 from Stevenson to Mosier by 11amn rising to gusty, up-and-down 23-26 from Cascade Locks to Doug’s this afternoon. The steadiest, strongest wind will likely be at Steven’s Locks, with gustier, less reliable conditions elsewhere. The wind will spread east to Arlington late in the day.
We’ll see more clouds and possibly showers in the western Gorge tomorrow, and that will shift the wind further east. Expect 22-25 early from Doug’s to Arlington, picking up and getting steadier in the afternoon as the low exits east and high pressure builds off the coast. We should see 26-30+ from Rowena (maybe) to Maryhill (most likely) and Arlington (pretty likely) after noon. There’s a LOT of water in the Columbia right now – 382kcfs at John Day – and that’s going to make for strong current at Maryhill.
Thursday sees building high pressure and less clouds, leaving us with westerlies in the low twenties or so, strongest from Stevenson to Doug’s.
Gorge Weather
It’s partly cloudy this morning with a pretty sunrise. High clouds will increase this afternoon as a low pressure system moves onshore. According to NOAA’s precip model, upper elevations will see some rain tonight. Hmm. Anyway, temps will be in the upper 40’s early and upper 60’s this afternoon with increasing wind that will blow at all elevations, not just at river level.
Tomorrow starts out cloudy, with showers likely after 11am. Rainbows are also likely. Call it a 70% chance of rainbows tomorrow with a 20% chance of thundershowers after 2pm. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and low 60’s in the afternoon with moderate wind near Hood River and strong wind elsewhere.
Thursday starts partly cloudy, becoming clear. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and upper 60’s late with moderate west wind.
Road and Mountain Biking
According to the 44 Trails Association website, Fifteenmile trail is open, implying that lower 450 trail is open as well. The upper part of 450 trail is not open, and neither are Gunsight, Boulder Lake, High Prairie, etc.
According to the Gifford Pinchot website, Lewis River trail is open. Ape Canyon / Plains of Abraham is not. Are not. Also according to Gifford Pinchot, both Siouxon and Huffman are open and logged out. Wow. Not sure I believe that, but somebody better go check it.
According to Tonia’s husband, upper Post Canyon is dusty. Maybe we’ll get some rain on Wednesday to fix that, but if it rains on Wednesday, I’m riding Little Moab laps on Thursday morning. We call that a pre-therapy therapy ride. Hopefully that will be followed by post-therapy cobbler at Morgan’s house.

River Levels
Guess what? I forgot to call Wet Planet AGAIN yesterday. The White Salmon is at 3.9′. The Hood is at 4.5′, the Klickitat’s at 2250cfs, and the Columbia is at 382kcfs at John Day. The Dalles sensor is down. Again.

Today is Tuesday. That means there is pickup rugby at 5:30 at the Hood River Marina. There’s also triathlon practice at 6:15 at Mayer Park in Rowena. And there’s $12 Prime Rib at Cebu from 5pm to 9pm. Yum.
