Random Morning Thoughts

You might have noticed that I took yesterday off. I did that because I slept for 10 hours and then headed to Meadows for The Best Employee Ski Day Ever, also known as The Last Powder Day of the Season III. The great thing about this past week is that I had my three best ski days of the season , known as The Last Powder Day of the Season, The Last Powder Day of the Season II, and The Last Powder Day of the Season III. This leaves me stoked for next season. Hooray!

Hood 2 River Relay

The Hood 2 River Relay is a one-day event on May 31st. This fun and all-inclusive event is designed for almost any level of skill and fitness, yet competitive enough for the hardcore athlete where participants compete in teams, pairs, or individuals to race from the high slopes of Mt. Hood down to the mighty Columbia River. There will be six Legs that consist of; Alpine ski, nordic ski, mountain bike, road bike, road run, boating (kayak/canoe/SUP) and a 500 meter sprint to the finish line after boating. Open to individuals and teams. Visit their website for more information. And Pole-Pedal-Paddle, eat your heart out. You got nothin’ on the Hood 2 River!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There’s nothing but sun in the forecast for this week on Mt. Hood, hence the switch to the wind table. Maybe I’ll switch back on the weekend. Maybe I’ll do both. The weekend is too far away to be forecasting, let alone for decision making.

The freezing level will be 10,000′ today with light wind. It’ll be 12,000′ Wednesday with light wind. It’ll be 13,000′ on Thursday with light wind. I bet we’ll have some nice corn snow later this week.

Gorge Wind

It’s an east wind morning here in the Gorge, with low teens at Stevenson and upper 20’s to low 30’s at Rooster. That’s driven by an E.08 gradient. Expect those easterlies to fade just a bit as the day goes on and then pick up overnight. By Wednesday morning, we’re looking at 40+ at Rooster with 28-32 at Steven’s Locks. Thursday starts with an early morning E 23-26 session, quickly fading to light wind. Friday afternoon should bring some decent westerlies, but if the models are correct on a weather system moving in, it’s going to be gusty and unreliable except at Stevenson, Avery and Arlington. Wait and see, I guess. River water temp is 49 degrees. River flow is 314,000cfs.

Gorge Weather

The chances of rainbows and frost are both nil this week. We’ll see sun today with temps in the mid-40’s early and upper 60’s late with light east wind. Tomorrow looks sunny too, with temps in the upper 40’s early and low 70’s in the afternoon with slightly stronger east wind. Temps on Thursday will be in the upper 40’s early and right around 80 in the afternoon with light east wind. I like to refer to this as “tanning weather”, meaning Cathy C. and / or Denise W. will be getting phone calls from me later this week.

Road and Mountain Biking

I saw bikes that came from Post Canyon yesterday without mud on them. So you can probably find really nice dirt everywhere. Dog River trail is now clear of trees. I’m not sure whether it’s clear of snow. It was until Saturday, when it snowed a lot above 3000′ If it’s not clear now, it will be soon. That means Surveyor’s is likely clear of snow, if not of trees.

River Levels

The Hood is at 5.1′, the Klickitat is at 2130 cfs, and the White Salmon is somewhere in the 4’s, but I have no idea because Wet Planet hasn’t updated their FB page in four days. Last reading was 4.9′.

Events – email me if I’ve missed any outdoor-related events

Tonight is Tuesday night. You can play rugby at the Hood River Marina at 5:30pm. You can eat $12 Prime Rib at Cebu from 5pm to 9pm.

You have more options tomorrow night. There’s Karma Yoga at 4pm at Flow (free or by donation). There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 6:30pm ($5). There’s The Post And Pinot all-levels women’s MTB ride at Dirty Fingers at 5:30. There’s a free women’s bike repair clinic at Dirty Fingers at 7:30. There’s sailboat racing at the Hood River Marina at 6pm. Coming up Thursday, there’s an Oregon State Parks advisory board meeting at the Hood River Fire Station at 5:30pm. Come learn about OSP’s plans for the Gorge.

Coming up this weekend, it’s the Oregon Trail Rally (car) race all over Hood River and Wasco counties. It’s the Dog River Super D bike race (on Dog River Trail, duh). Water’s Edge in The Dalles has a 10k, half marathon, and duathlon.

Have an awesome day today!

Random Morning Thoughts

Today looks like a great day for the Daily Double. I’m working all day, so I’m only going to get the first half of the double. The rest of you will have to get the second half for me.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today is likely the last powder day of the season. As of 5am, there was 3” of new plus 30mph wind, which means there should be around a foot of wind-loaded snow. I don’t know about you, but I’m going to ski today. Well, I’m working at Meadows, so I have to ski today. Darn.

We’ll see continued snowfall today with the snow level around 2500′. Models say we’ll see .4” water value between now and 5pm, when the snow will taper off. So, call that another 3-4” of new during the day. Wind will be W 30 nearly all day, becoming WNW 30-40 late in the afternoon.

Monday looks clear in the morning with high clouds in the afternoon. The freezing level will be 1500′ early and 4000′ in the afternoon with NW wind at 15mph early and light and variable in the afternoon. Tuesday looks sunny and warm on Mt. Hood.

Gorge Wind

We’re starting off with light west wind and gradients of .04/.06. Expect the wind to pick up to gusty 13-16 from Steven’s Locks to Mosier, holding there all day. After noon, east of Mosier and all the way to Arlington, you’ll find 26-30 with higher periods possible at the Lyle and Maryhill stretches. Mid-afternoon will be the windiest period today.

Tomorrow starts with westerlies at 5-10 and becomes glassy. Tuesday brings easterlies at 5-15, strongest in the western Gorge, but definitely noticeable everywhere. Wednesday brings very strong east wind.

Gorge Weather

We’ll have showers and sunbreaks in the western Gorge today with sunshine out east and strong west wind. Looks like a great day to hunt some rainbows. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and low 50’s late. Tomorrow looks clear early with high clouds in the afternoon and light wind all day. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and low 60’s late. Tuesday looks warm and sunny with temps in the upper 40’s early and right around 70 in the afternoon with light east wind.

Road and Mountain Biking

I ran into M. Keep yesterday, and he let me know that Whoopdee was in great shape. Was. It rained on it all night, so it and Post are likely muddy now, which leaves you with Syncline. If you’re going to ride there, do it early, because strong wind this afternoon will make it an unpleasant place to ride. If you are a roadie, tomorrow looks awesome: high of 60ish and almost no wind. See you on the pavement!

River Levels

The Hood is at 5.4′, the Klickitat is at 2330 cfs, and the White Salmon is in the low 4′ range.

Events – email me if I’ve missed any outdoor-related events

The first swap meet of the season is today at Windance. Be there at 7am if you’re selling and 8am if you’re buying. Also today, there’s rugby at 3pm at the Mosier school and there’s ping pong ($5) at the Hood River armory. At T-Line today, it’s the Airblaster Board Games, some sort of rad comp, hopefully scheduled for somewhere below tree line, because the wind is nuking up there right now. And today is the Bear Springs Trap XC race, if not in the snow, then in the frigid rain. I’m cold just thinking about it.

Have an awesome day today!
